Projects, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 12th Oct 2017 @ 9:39pm

Wow, what a creative bunch you are Bongos.  We have had a whole variety of projects this week; times tables, shadow posters and investigations, biographies, map work, French vocabulary to name just a few.

Well done

Enterprise, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 12th Oct 2017 @ 8:59pm

Last Friday was a busy day.  The Bongos spent the morning preparing for our enterprise event. Thank you to Mrs Gray and Sandye for supporting the children in the kitchen.

The marshmallows sold quickly with only a few left.  The children were amazing and ran their stall with very little support.

We made £134.20 profit.  This money goes directly to the class to spend on items to support their learning. We are hoping to use some of it as part of an exciting trip which I am arranging for later on in the school year.  As a class we will discuss what else we would like to purchase.

Thank you to everyone who came and supported the event.

Longton Village, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 12th Oct 2017 @ 6:42pm

We walked in to Longton today and had a look at the shops and street furniture . We drew some great pictures and had lots of fun as people waved to us (a lot!) and trucks honked their horns, we loved it!!

Song for the class assembly, by Mr Pearson

Date: 12th Oct 2017 @ 9:56am

Please find below the song for our class assembly next Friday 20th October.

Verse 1

From many sources it’s brought to life,

The result electrifies!

Sent out through cables, to all our homes,

Bringing daily power suppli-i-ies.

Chorus It’s got the power, it’s got the strength.

It’s a current energy!

Let’s get connected, let’s get switched on

To e-lec-tric-i-ty-y-y!

Verse 2

It uses circuits, to make its rounds!

Flows through wires to plugs and more!

We find a socket and turn it on,

Powering gadgets we ad-o-o-ore!

Chorus It’s got the power……

Verse 3

Conductors like it, let it pass through.

Insulators like to block!

Electric power, treat it with care!

Or you’ll get a nasty sho-o-ock!

Chorus It’s got the power……

Repeat E-lec-tric-i-ty-y-y!’

E-lec-tric-i-ty-y-y!’

Homework, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 12th Oct 2017 @ 7:26am

Hello! Homework is going out today - Mrs Woolley has got it. smiley Sorry I didn't get round to writing this last night because of parents evening!

The English homework is resisiting being uploaded I'm afraid - but it's just a sheet working on adverbs to recap what we've been doing in class.

Maths is working more on perimeter of rectilinear shapes and the spicy challenge is being given out with the normal homework this week (on the back). I'd really love it is everyone could have a go at some of it - even if it is just 1 question! We did the pentagon one in class, so you can just do that one if you like! Remember there are two rules for regular shapes - 1) All the sides are the same length and 2) All the angles are the same length. It's not regular if it doesn't follow BOTH rules!

Also, there will be a dojo point for everyone who gets their homework in before the weekend. smiley

Leaflet research, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 11th Oct 2017 @ 8:41pm

The Penguins enjoyed finding out about leaflets this afternoon. They looked at them and then we discussed what we could see on them e.g. photos, maps, directions, writing. We wrote out a check list for when we are writing our own leaflets about Longton.

We are looking forward to finding out more about Longton tomorrow🙂

PSHE - what makes a good friend

Music - exploring instruments

PE - gymnastics - combining moves to make a sequence, throwing  and catching games

Geography. - walk to Longton village, stand by St Andrews church and observe the shops and street furniture they can see ( Thursday morning)

Art- make sketches of different places in Longton , combine and choose an image that sums up Longton, start to create their printing tile

Thank you for your support with projects , the children have been very proud to show and share them and we have all enjoyed  listening🙂

Week beginning the 9th October, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 8th Oct 2017 @ 6:10pm

I am away on a course all day on Thurday and Friday - so I will be teaching all day Monday & Tuesday, instead of having Mrs Fletcher in those afternoons. Then someone else will be covering me on Thursday and Friday. smiley It also means that I'll be sending homework home on Wednesday instead of Thursday and, as always, I'll put up a Maths spicy challenge on the website. If you need it printing out for you, just ask Mrs Woolley reaaaaaallly nicely and I'm sure she'd be happy to do it for you.

I'm really looking forward to seeing all of you at 'Parents Evening' this Monday and Wednesday and discussing how your children are settling into year 5 - See you then!

Miss R

This week will look like this:

English: Writing persuasive letters

GPS: Revisiting adverbials

Maths: Geometry - Perimeter of rectilinear shapes (for a bit of spicy maths fun - try this little game at home! Don't worry about the area stuff yet, but the perimeter will definitely come in handy!)

Geography: Map reading/Orienteering

Computing: Research using search engines and considering relevance of websites

PSHE: Jigsaw - British Values

French: Making visual vocabulary lists

PE: No gymnastics this week because the hall will be filled with our projects for parents evening. So, on Monday, we will be going outside and playing some sporty halloween themed games! devil Friday cricket will still be on.

If you have any artefacts/special skills/holiday pics etc. that would help us with our learning - please feel free to volunteer them! We would love to have some visitors to our class this year and learning always works best when it is contextualised!

Week Beginning Monday 9th October 2017, by Miss Adamson

Date: 8th Oct 2017 @ 11:38am

Hello all :)

I hope that you are enjoying your weekend.

This is what we are doing this week:

English

We are writing and performing poetry.

Maths

We are working on addition and subtraction. We are solving missing number sentences, solving number stories and making addition sentences that balance using Numicon.

Phonics

Miss Adamson's phonics group has completed phase 3 and 4 review. We are focusing on ay (e.g. may I play), ou (e.g. shout it out), ea (e.g. a cup of tea) and oy (e.g. toy for a boy). Mrs Thomson's group are focusing on oa (e.g. goat in a boat), oo (e.g. poo at the zoo), and ar (e.g. start the car).

Handwriting

We are practising cursive letter formation in our special handwriting books and ensuring we are writing using the tripod grip.

Jigsaw

We are making freeze frames in groups that show us making good choices.

Design and Technology

We are designing, making and evaluating superhero hand puppets.

PE

We are learning about balancing and running.

A note about spellings

With your children's spellings, do not worry about getting a new set every week. We are also reviewing their old spellings on a Friday as we find that otherwise we remember the most recent and forget the old. Some of the lists are very tricky so it will take longer than one week of practise to ensure that children are confident in spelling them. Thank you for all your effort. We have been pleasantly surprised by how well the children are doing in the weekly check!

I look forward to seeing you all in the week.

Many thanks,

Miss Adamson

Jigsaw Jenie, by Mrs Hothersall

Date: 6th Oct 2017 @ 10:00pm

As part of our PSHE curriculum we have a friend called Jigsaw Jenie he stays in our class and helps us to follow the class rules. This week we have been thinking about gentle hands. We read a story called hands are not for hitting. We then thought about how hands can be kind and gentle. We waved hello and goodbye, we shook hands, we held hands to keep safe when crossing the road and we thought of much more....we decided that we would not hit or push as a class and if someone did something we didn't like in school we would say "please don't do that we don't like it."

Water fun, by Mrs Hothersall

Date: 6th Oct 2017 @ 9:48pm

We have had fun inside and outside with water. We have had a dinosaur wash... And yellow water inside just for a change. We have washed and scrubbed and filled and emptied!

KS 2 event, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 6th Oct 2017 @ 4:10pm

Well done to some Year 3 and 4 children ,who took part in a KS 2 event at All Hallows. They were awarded the 'Spirit of the games' certificate , which made us very proud. Thank you to those parents who supported.

Projects, by Miss Adamson

Date: 6th Oct 2017 @ 4:10pm

Thank you ever so much for your projects. We are just astounded! Cannot believe all the work that has gone into them. I hope you enjoyed making them! Some boys and girls showed their project to the class this afternoon but we didn't all as we didn't have time. We will share the rest on Monday!

ps the cake and biscuits went down a treat - thank you Alice and Amelia!

Talk task, by Miss Adamson

Date: 6th Oct 2017 @ 4:08pm

We had to do lots of talking in maths today! We read some subtraction sentences and proved that they were correct using counters. We had to explain our thinking.

End of a busy week., by Mrs Pratten

The amazing Giraffes have produced an amazing range of projects for this term. Please find the photos of them.

More to be added on Monday

Story Massage, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 5th Oct 2017 @ 10:31pm

The Bongos had a lovely afternoon on Wednesday with Mrs Thompson and Mrs Gray.  They took part in a story massage session.  This builds on the peer massage work that is carried out in school.  The children learn a range of movements which are used to help tell a story.  As I walked through the hall there was calm and a lovely atmosphere between the children.

Homework, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 5th Oct 2017 @ 8:09am

This week in English homework, we've got a practice sheet on modal verbs that we have working on in class. In Maths, the homework is a photocopy, so I have uploaded it here, just in case you are not sure whether you have it or not... but it is pretty terrible quality, so if you lose it just let me know and I'll photocopy you a new one. smiley The spicy challenge is also here - remember if you do the spicy challenge and find it is too hard, you don't have to finish it and you certainly shouldn't be stressing about it!

A wet and windy Brickcroft, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 4th Oct 2017 @ 4:55pm

We dodged the showers (pretty much) and had a great visit to the Brickcroft. We followed our maps and looked for things we could see, we were fantastic at spotting lots of things! We had our fruit at the Brickcroft and then it was time to feed the hungry ducks.
