We have been learning about animals - their diets and groups. We made a meal for a pet and designed our own zoo where animals were organised according to whether they were a mammal, reptile, amphibian, bird or fish.

We made our own nests using clay and materials we could find outside. We tested the nests for sturdiness in the wind, using a hairdryer.

This week we are celebrating British Science Week. There are lots of exciting things happening in school. Our timetable will be a little different than usual so I have split it up according to each day's main events as opposed to subjects. Guided reading and phonics will happen everyday as usual so I have not added them to the timetable.

Reading books - we will not have all our reading teachers in on Thursday and Friday so books will be changed on Wednesday this week. Children will received four books for the holidays. Apologies for this change - things will be back to normal after the Easter break.

We practised divison as sharing on Wednesday. We used counters and whiteboards to help us. It looks like we are really concentrating!

Here is what we are doing this week:

English

We are reading and writing about the Gingerbread Man.Sorry, it is a change from the curriculum overview but a great story!

Maths

We are learning about multiplication and division. We are using our knowledge of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to help us. 

Phonics

Mrs Coxhead's group are reviewing consonant clusters and words with endings. Mrs Thomson's group are reading and writing different pronounciations of 'y'.

Jigsaw

We are learning about household objects that are safe and unsafe.

RE

We are learning about Easter and the theme of forgiveness.

PE

We are continuing our dance unit.

Reading

We are still doing our daily reading. The children are coping really well with our new timetable and we hope it will help them grow into even more confident readers!

I hope that you are enjoying your weekend! Here is what we are doing this week:

Maths

We are learnin about fractions. Specifically, we are finding halves and quarters of shapes and amounts.

English

We are completing our Little Red Riding Hood writing. We are describing a setting and then planning and writing our own innovated stories. 

Reading

We will continue to follow our new Guided Reading timetable. That means that children will read for twenty minutes per day. Books will be changed again on Friday. 

Phonics

Mrs Thomson's group are learning more alternative pronounciations for the same grapheme. Mrs Coxhead's group are using the graphemes they know to help them to read words containing 'ing' and 'ed' suffixes.

Art

We are drawing and painting portraits in the style of Modigliani.

Jigsaw

We are learning to importance of keeping ourselves clean.

PE

We are continuing our Three Little Pigs dance unit.

On Monday, we are walking to church for our termly celebration assembly.

Here is what the Meerkats are doing this week:

Maths

We are solving addition and subtraction problems. We will need to use some of our learning about measuring from last week to help us!

English

We are reading Little Red Riding Hood. We are studying the characters and setting. We will also be looking at words with -ed endings and continuing our look at conjunctions.

Reading

Year One is now reading in class four times per week. This means that books will now be changed on a Friday. Please see Parent mail for more information (Monday 26th February 2018)

Phonics

Mrs Thomson's group are working on alternative pronounciations, Mrs Coxhead's group are practising reading and writing phase 5 graphemes in words and sentences.

Seasonal Changes

We are learning about the changes in springtime. We are spotting signs of springs and drawing and painting some of the changes.

Jigsaw

We are learning how to make healthy lifestyle choices.

PE

We are combining our dance sequences from the little pigs and the wolf to create a new dance.

World Book Day

On Friday, it is World Book Day. Children can dress-up in Winter Olympic themed clothes. We are reading Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner.

I hope that you had a wonderful break celebrating Shrove Tuesday, St Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year. Here is the plan for this week:

English

We are reading the story of Hansel and Gretel. We will use conjunctions and learn about the prefix 'un'.

Maths

We are measuring! We will measure length/height using a ruler and we will have a go at measuring mass/weight.

Phonics

We are doing some more assessments from last half-term. While that's going on we'll review some of the phase 5 sounds we have done up until now.

PE

We are dancing to Flight of the Bumblebee, as Little Pigs who are afraid of the Big Bad Wolf.

Jigsaw

We are launching our Healthy Me topic. We'll have a look at the difference between healthy and unhealthy and find some ways to keep healthy. 

History

We are learning about important events that have happened in our lifetimes. We will also compare birthdays today with birthdays that happened in the past (1930s).

I hope that you are enjoying your weekends. Next week is our termly check-up week. Children will be completing assessments throughout the week. Here is the plan for next week:

English

We are completing our work on Jack and the Beanstalk. We will retell the story and then write our own version with a different character. 

Maths

We will be learning about quarter, half, three quarter and full turns.

Phonics

We will be completing practise phonics screening checks as part of our check-up week.

Jigsaw 

We will be learning about how challenges can stretch our learning and learning about obstacles that can make challenges more difficult and how to overcome them.

PE

In PE we will continue our dances about The Three Little Pigs.

Trip

On Thursday morning we are visiting Barton Grange. School will provide your child with a packed lunch (as we will be a little late for hot dinners) unless you have indicated that you would rather prepare your own packed lunch at home. 

Tuesday

On Tuesday, Mrs Coxhead is on a course. Mrs Robinson will cover and do some Relax Kids activities.

This week, Holiday Passports will be put inside red book bags to complete over half-term.

Plants and growth projects continued, by Mrs Coxhead

We have been learning to tell the time to the hour. We have started to read the time to the half hour, too. We have discussed the activities that we do at different times of the day.

We discussed being successful in Jigsaw yesterday. We each received a coin with one of our successes written on it. We made a treasure chest to keep our success coin inside.

Maths

We are telling the time to the hour and half hour on an analogue clock. We will also discuss what we do at different times of the day.

English

We are reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We will identify and discuss the main character. We will infer Jack's feelings when he is at the top of the beanstalk. 

Phonics

Mrs Thomson's group is learning alternative pronounciations for 'ie' and 'ea'. Mrs Coxhead's group is beginning to learn about split diagraphs. 

Jigsaw

We will begin our Dreams and Goals topic.

PE

We will begin our dance unit.

On Tuesday it is our dress rehearsal for the Bee Musical. If you have not sent in your child's costume, please could you send it to school on Monday. If you are unable to find the bits that your child needs, don't worry, but please let us know so that we can try to find them.
