Year 6: The Elephants: Blog items

What have we done today?, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 11th Dec 2023 @ 10:13pm

Monday

Today we have ....

Morning task - revised adding the suffix es to words ending in y. Someties it makes an i sound as in complies and sometimes it makes an ee sound as in babies.

Spelling -  we discussed the meaning of the suffix ful and then identified it in this week's spellings.

Reading - we enjoyed reading the text The night before the night before Christmas together and the did an awesome job answering our  VIPERS questions.

Maths started with Fluent in Five ( 5 arithmetic questions) and a reasoning task. Most of us then worked on multiplying fractions by fractions. Some children did some work with Mrs Atkinson on mixed numbers.

English - started by listening to the poem The Highwayman - lots of the class were joining in . Today's English task was working with a partner to do a vocabulary task. Having chosen 5 words from a vocab list the children wrote what they thought the word meant in the poem before looking it up in dictionaries- book and online.

PE - it was evidence day today in Gymnastics. The class did an amazing job creating gymnastics sequences using counterbalance and countertension. The sequences were videoed for assessment evidence.

During RE some children went with Mrs Brown to chrch to deliver the Christmas art boards, some were sewing with Mrs Atkinson and some were getting more points for the class on the Times Tables Rock Stars Tournament. We will look at confirmation later in the week when we are all together.

Tomorrow afternoon we will be finishing our geography unit and doing some more work on our playground structures in DT.

Year 6 have been busy this week showing what amazing learners they are. There has been a real imrovemnet in the presentation of work this week and the class are rising to every challenge they are are faced with.

In LPS+ the children looked at the new Blue Peter Badge for reading and discussed how important reading ie, reaching the conclusion that it really is the key that opens doors of opportunity.

In maths we are getting ready to tackle long division, it would be great if over the coming weeks the children could spend some time on Times Tables Rockstars refreshing their knowledge - it will really help !

Don't forget that projects are in soon - we can't wait to see them.

Science Explorers, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 8th Mar 2023 @ 8:22pm

At lunchtime 31 children and 4 adults left school and headed by coach to Widnes. The reason for the trip was for a group of science explorers made up of scientists from Years 3,4,5,6 to visit the Catalyst Science and Discovery Centre in Widnes. Jacob one of our Year 6 Science Ambassadors has been working hard to organise the trip and he did a great job making the booking, checking us in and leading us on and off the coach.

On arrival at the centre we dropped our bags off and went to explore the museum. The first gallery visited was an interactive one where everyne had an enormous amount of fun learning through practical hands on science. At half past two we did a soap making worksop where we learnt about the history of soap and the chemisrty involved in making the product. The best bit was getting to make soap, colour it and add a fragrance. The finished products looked great and smelt fantastic.

Next we had a look at the other galleries, including the observation gallery on the top floor- more about that one later.

Fresh air was then needed so outside we went to spend some time on the playground and zipwire. After a while it started to get cold so we headed back inside the museum. However instead of getting ready to head back to Longton we headed to the cafe for our tea. Following a feast we went to collect our bags and started the long climb to the top floor where the observation gallery was to become our bedroom for the night. The views from the room were spectacular, especially as the lights came on across Widnes and on the bridges spanning the Mersey. It was made even better by the fact that it as a clear night and a full moon.

Once sleep areas had been set up , pyjamas were popped on and we settled down to watch a movie accompanied by a range of snacks.

Following a good sleep the scientists were all up and ready for action this morning. Breakfast of cereal and toast was enjoyed before an amazing workshop in the theatre about the universe, infra red light, magnetism and many other things.

The next part of the adventure took us outside to see the sapling presented to the museum in January which has grown from a seed from Isac Newtons tree. The seed had been to space with British astronaut Tim Peake.

Once back insode the children headed back into the interactive gallery to further enjoy the science on offer.

The trip was a huge success, the children were fantastic ambassadors for the school and all had a wonderful time. Memories for life have definitely been created and we all thank Jacob for organising this wonderful opportunity .

Enterprise success, by Mr Pearson

Date: 30th Nov 2022 @ 2:25pm

The Elephant tribe held a successful enterprise event in November. The children chose a space themed biscuit sale linked to our science topic.
Chocolate was melted and biscuits dipped and decorated.
A design team made posters and the accounting team worked out how much to sell them while making a profit.
We actually sold out of biscuits and had to make a second batch.
A profit of £80 was made.
Big thank you to Mrs Doherty and her daughter Ella who made the prototype biscuits.
