Year 7(: The Bongos: Blog items

The Week Ahead - Tuesday 2nd May, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 1st May 2017 @ 9:28pm

I hope you have all had a fantastic Bank Holiday weekend.

We have a busy week in school, preparing for our assembly on Thursday morning.  The children will be busy finishing off writing their own material to present and preparing some props.  I'm sure you will be as proud of them as I am. They have been keen to go off and research their parts for the assembly and put together a passage to read or perform or to make a prop.

Our spelling activities this week will continue to focus on suffixes.  Adding less / ness / ful / ed / in / es / s to root words.  We will be continuing to practice words from the Year 3 and 4 statutory word list.  Please practice these at home.  Several children received their Golden Bike certificates in assembly on Friday.  Well done.  Don't forget to practice using Spellodrome.

English - To complete our unit on Play scripts we will be writing a play script to go with a silent film clip we have been watching called Dum Spiro.  Starting with the dialogue and then adding in the stage directions before the children will have the opportunity to write their own mini play script  - a story of their own, or a scene from a story they know well.

Maths -  we will continue to develop our understanding of subtraction word problems and methods before moving on to multiplication and division word problems.

Art - we will begin to design our own mosaics and think about different methods we could use to create them.

R.E. - Sikhism. We will be learning about Guru Nanak.

DEWA Roman Experience, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 1st May 2017 @ 9:05pm

We had a great day on Monday in Chester. The weather stayed fine for the afternoon as we walked to the Ampitheatre and tried out our battle techniques.

We learnt lots of facts about the Romans. We don't want to give too much away, you can find out all about it during our assembly.

English - Play scripts., by Mrs Catterall

Date: 23rd Apr 2017 @ 2:15pm

This half term we are learning about Playscripts in English.

This week we have been annotating scripts to identify their features and also highlighting the script for our own part.

We have practised our lines and have explored a drama technique 'sculpt and the sculpted'. The group had to sculpt one of their actors into a position and give direction as to their facial expressions for one of the scenes in their play.  They worked fantastically well in their teams.  Here a few of the photos we captured.  I'm sure they will make you smile?

Tomorrows Trip, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 23rd Apr 2017 @ 2:09pm

I hope you are all enjoying the sunny weather this weekend. smiley

Just a few reminders for tomorrow.

Having looked at the weather forecast, it looks like the weather is going to turn and be quite cold and possibly windy.

As we will be spending the afternoon walking around Chester with our Legionary guide please ensure the children come to school wearing a warm coat.  I have told the children that they may wear trainers if they want to as we will be walking around, however all other normal school uniform rules apply.

Lunches have been ordered from the kitchen for those who requested one.  If you are bringing your own packed lunch please no fizzy drinks, chocolate or sweets.

The children may wish to bring an additional bottle of water if they are thirsty walking around in the afternoon.  This can be put in their pocket or a small rucksack with their lunch.  I can put some in my bag but I won't fit 30!

We will be leaving Chester at approximately 2:15 and aim to be back at school for 3:45.

I'm sure it will be a great day.  We will tell you all about it in our forthcoming class assembly.

What an action packed day! , by Mrs Catterall

Date: 20th Apr 2017 @ 9:45pm

Today has been an exciting day in lots of ways.

We spent the first half an hour this morning sat in our newly extended room, taking in our new surroundings, being excited by the space and the freshly painted walls.  Then the move started. The children were extremely sensible carrying the tables and moving all our belongings into our room.   We are still in the process of putting everything back in its place so photos will follow next week.

After play we had a special assembly as we welcomed Isaac into school.  Isaac Towers is 18 years old and a  paralympian athlete who competed in Rio last year.  He explained his bike to us and we got to see his medals, they were quite heavy!

This afternoon we completed our move for 15 mins.  There were some very red faces at the end, I don't think they realised that running for 15 mins without stopping was going to be so tough.  Everyone got into the spirit and we had some skipping and hopping as well.  We finished off with our delicious smoothies.

As well as Art and History it has certainly been a fantastic action packed day.

Monday's times table practise., by Mrs Catterall

Date: 20th Apr 2017 @ 9:25pm

On Monday we had great fun making a quick game to help us practise our 4x and 8x tables.  We wrote the calculation on one side of a piece of card and the answer on the other.  We showed our partner the calculation and they recalled the answer to win the card.  The second time around the person was shown the answer and they had to recall the calculation.  There was hardly a sound in class as they all concentrated hard to win the cards.  Many of the children chose to take their game home to continue practising.

Science - Forces, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 22nd Mar 2017 @ 10:06pm

We have been really enjoying our Science topic on forces so far.  We have been exploring how a car travels on different surfaces and developing our skills in recording data in a table.  We gathered all the data together in a spreadsheet and looked for any results we thought might not be accurate and discussed why thismight be. The children showed a really good understanding of how we could make the test as fair as possible.  Great work Giraffes.

We will be developing our force knowledge and exploring magnets later this week so keep a look out for our findings.

Iron Man - DT, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 16th Mar 2017 @ 6:33pm

They have developed a variety of skills through this unit of work.  I am very proud of their final moving models as I'm sure you will be.

Each mechanism uses levers and linkages in different formations to create a particular output. We have displayed these on a design board. The children are now using this knowledge to design and create a moving  Iron Man. Work is in progress and we hope to have some completed moving iron men to show you next week.
