Year 7(: The Bongos: Blog items

Biscuits 1, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 11th Nov 2016 @ 10:58pm

This afternoon the children showed great team work while baking chocolate chip biscuits.  Each week they will be making and evaluating a different type of biscuit and then deciding which ones to make and sell at the Christmas play performances.  I hope there are a few extra biscuits every week, I really enjoyed them today.

Skeletons, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 11th Nov 2016 @ 10:48pm

On Monday this week we had great fun exploring what we already know about our skeletons.  There were some very interesting ideas. Throughout the afternoon we developed our understanding of where bones go and what shape they are and have begun to learn the scientific names for them.  Over the next few weeks we will be comparing animal skeletons, looking at how our muscles work and then designing our owns skeletons for a specific task. Watch this space.

Biographies, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 26th Oct 2016 @ 11:49pm

For the last 2 weeks we have been focusing on Biographies in our English lessons.  I have been impressed by the children's dedication to researching facts about the author 'Dick King Smith'.  They have worked together in pairs cooperatively and have organised their facts under subheadings.  This week we have been focusing on writing in paragraphs.  I can't wait to read their finished biographies which they are going to publish using the computer skills we have been learning this half term.

Shadows, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 24th Oct 2016 @ 7:53pm

The sun was shining this afternoon and we took the opportunity to look at our shadows and compare them to the predictions we made on Friday last week.  The children discovered the position of their afternoon shadow was correct, however soon realised their shadow was an outline and didn't have hair, eyes and socks like their predicted shadows did! With the knowledge of how to make shadows larger and smaller using puppets on Friday they have shown a good understanding of shadows and had fun outdoors researching it.  Let's hope we have some sun in the morning to test out our am shadow position predictions.

Enterprise Day, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 12th Oct 2016 @ 7:31pm

What an amazing achievement Giraffes!  Over the last week we have been busy preparing for our enterprise day, planning, researching and today making our products then selling them after school.  It was a great success, with only a few items left unsold.  Thank you to Mrs Parker for helping out this afternoon with Mrs Regan.

We will look forward to adding up the money tomorrow and calculating our profit.  We can then decide on what we would like to buy for our classroom.

I'm very proud teacher, a super team tribe effort Giraffes, well done.

Thank you to everyone who supported the event.

European Day of Languages, by Mrs Fletcher

This afternoon the children celebrated European Day of Languages by taking part in lots of Language themed activities.

The Penguins ( Year 1) learnt the colours of the rainbow in German

The Bongos ( Year 2 ) learnt greetings, classroom instructions, numbers to 10 and how to tell somebody their name and age in French.

The Giraffes ( Year 3) looked at the work of Paul Klee, a Swiss-German artist and learnt the names of colours.

They tried to make dark colours like his paintings. E.g.  Dunkelrot.  = dark red

The Tigers ( Year 4) learnt lots of intersesting facts about germant such as there are 400 zoos in Germany and tasted German food.

The Bears (Year 5) learnt greetings, times of day and how to say introduce themselves in Spanish.

The Kangaroos (Year 6) made bookmarks. On one side they decorated them with symbols of Germany, such as the flag, car badges and on the other they wrote about themselves in German.

At the end of the afternoon the children had the opportunity to share what they had been doing in assembly.

German afternoon, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 26th Sep 2016 @ 7:29pm

We had an arty afternoon today as part of Eurpoean Languages Day.  We looked at the paintings of Paul Klee and the dark colours he used.  We learnt the German words for colours and created our own Paul Klee painting, as well as practising our 'word' skills changing the colours of text.

JUMPERS and CARDIGANS, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 19th Sep 2016 @ 6:42pm

The weather is still warm and the children are taking off their jumpers and cardigans.  There are a couple of children who seemed to have misplaced theirs, they are named.  Please can you have a check to see if anyone has brought home the wrong or an extra one by mistake.

Please ensure you name your child's jumper or cardigan so it can be quickly returned if it gets misplaced.

Many thanks

Mrs Catterall

A busy week, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 19th Sep 2016 @ 6:25pm

What another fantastic week we have had in Year 3.  Lots going on with our Roald Dahl day activities and our first swimming lesson.

On Tuesday we enjoyed describing our hunt for the Golden Ticket in school.  The Golden ticket is still hiding away in one of the books in school.  I wonder who might find it when they change their reading books next week?

In the afternoon we had lots of creative activities going on.

Origami foxes (Fantastic Mr Fox), play doh sweet creations (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Mr Twit's messy beard (The Twits), dream catchers and dream jars (BFG) as well as some painting (The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me). The children all worked really well and it was lovely to see lots of children helping each other out with some of the more tricky bits of the activities.

On Thursday the children were very excitied to be going swimming.  They were patient and waited their turn while Jane assessed their skills.  Next week they will get to spend more time swimming in their different groups.

I know it's going to be a great year.

Roald Dahl Day, by Mr Coxhead

Date: 13th Sep 2016 @ 6:18pm

Roald Dahl Day has been a thriving success!

We all gathered for an assembly at the end of the day to share some of the fantastic work produced in each class. Year 6 performed a poem from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which you can see a video of below. Years 1 to 5 shared a wide range of dazzling work (from extended writing to various styles of artwork) - photographs can be seen below!

During the assembly, we drew names from the BFG's 'dream jar' to find out who had won the Association's Gloriumptious Roald Dahl competition. We invited three very special people to the stage to draw names from the jar (all of whom share their birthday with Roald Dahl!): Stanley in Y2, Bailey in Y3 and our very own Sandye!

The overall winner of the 29-CD Roald Dahl Audiobook Collection was Sara (Y5). Five runner-up prizes (a BFG Activity & Sticker Book) were also won.

Thank you to everyone who donated £1 by entering the competition! We have raised over £140 to replenish the stock of Roald Dahl novels in our school library.

WELCOME BACK, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 11th Sep 2016 @ 5:15pm

A warm welcome back to the new school year.  Giraffes are now in Key Stage 2!

We have had a lovely first week back in school getting to know each other.    We have been in the computer suite, used the ipads, had a try at Jujitsu, practised our German and used the Atlases as part of our topic work.

We have lots more new experiences waiting for us next week with Roald Dahl day activities on Tuesday and our first swimming lesson on Thursday.

The Giraffes have made an excellent start to the year.  Well done.
