Hello everybody! Thank you so much for coming to our class assembly last week! It was great to see so many of you there to support us. As a result of all our hard work, we earned our Class Compliment, which means we get a class reward this week! We have decided on building dens and watching a movie in our pj's. It's going to take place on Wednesday afternoon, so if you want to bring pyjamas and any blankets you want, that'd be great.
It's also parent's evening on Monday and Wednesday, which means that projects should be in on Monday. If projects have slipped your mind, please don't panic and rush it tonight - if you want to make one, just drop it in before Wednesday and we'll add it to our display for Wednesday's parent's evening and we'll share them with the rest of the class sometime after that. 
Also, some parents have been asking about Hothersall Lodge - I will send out a Parent Mail about it this week, but I have set a preliminary date of Wednesday 31st January (TBC). I will send out the kitlist with the Parent Mail too.
Finally, we will be going to see our buddies on Thursday afternoon. I know lots of people have been doing nice little things for their buddies, so just thought it was worth giving you a heads-up about it.

Hi,
Sorry for the inconvinience we realised that Mrs Fletcher was teaching us so we couldn't catch you up. Putting that aside, we will tell you about this week. In Maths, we have played battleships. This was to strengthen our co-ordinate skills even more (We have become co-ordinates masters thanks to Miss Reynolds!). We have finished and presented our rainforest PowerPoints today. They were all excellent (The ones that we have seen so far!) and we can't wait to see the others. We have practiced our class assembaly and most of us know our lines. We have now finished our great Kapok tree in Kellys club.

Happy New Year readers! This week has been exellent for us. We have been sorting out new units for all subjects and they have been outstanding! Our English homework is to create a word bank for our Prequel to the great Kapok tree. Here is an example of our homework : A powerful, stealy, carnivorous feline prowling the underbrush.

Hello everybody and Happy New Year! I hope you've had a really wonderful christmas break and are ready to attack Spring 1! I'll upload the curriculum overview for this half term in just a sec, but in a nutshell, our topic is 'Amazon Adeventures'. Please remember that projects will be due in on the first Parents evening - as it is not far away, it can be on something that we did last half term (Food, Glorious Food was our topic - we did lots on reversible and irreversible changes and made biscuits in D.T fr our enterprise), or you can do something on our new Topic!

I would just like to say thank you very much for all of the lovely Christmas cards and presents I have received. It is very kind of you all to think of me at this special time of year.
I have had an amazing first term worling in Years 6, 5 and 4. I have never worked in this capacity before and your children have made it one of the most rewarding periods in my teaching career.
At this special time of year I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and wish you well for 2018.

This week in Year 5 , we have skyped Silla (Miss Reynolds' Icelandic friend) and asked her some questions. Here are some examples:how do you say hello in Icelandic? ANSWER:hallo (it sounds German), Do you find it hot or cold in Iceland? ANSWER: Mostly cold, it was -8°C at 11:50am (when we skyped Silla). In Maths, we did some Christmas Questions like: Kerry Buys ten boxes of sixor 89p each,four boxes of six luxury mince pies for £2 eac and four boxes of free from mince pies for £1.75 each, what is the average cost of each mince pie to the nearest penny? We worked out the total cost of the mince pies and then we worked out how much mince pies Kerry has.

This Thursday we have had a wedding day. We learned about lots of different types of marriges. Love comes in all sorts of different shapes and sizes. Love doesn't alwvays mean marrige and marrige doesn't always mean love. You don't always have to marry someone because you love them.You can get an arranged marrige. In some religions a man can have as much wives as he wants. Some people commit suicide because people make fun of them being gay or lesbian. You can have platonic love to someone which means you like a friend.

Today in science we had to separate: rice, rocks, glitter, metal paperclips and salt-water solution.They had all been mixed together in one plastic container and we had to find a way to separate them.Our group used a magnet to get the paperclips out because they where the only metal thing in there and they would atract to the magnet.To get the glitter out we had to filter it, which was quite hard.To get the rice out we had to use a net to sieve it out.To get the rocks out we used a spoon.To get the salt out of the water we used a tealight to heat up the solution and evaporate the water which left us with the salt.We also made a time lapse of it and put it on the blog so you can see what happend;we realy enjoyed it.

We just want to say a big thank you to everyone that bought a cookie or hot chocolate from us on Friday - we had lots of fun making everything, but apparently 80 biscuits wasn't nearly enough! The whole school wanted our delicious treats... Sorry if you missed out! We managed to make a profit of around £50! Thank you very much to Mrs Baller and Mrs Ashcroft for lending a hand too!

Don't forget that we are taking an Athletics team to Priory on Tuesday - if you haven't already returned your permission slip, please bring that in Monday! If there are any parents that would be available to take some children to and from Priory, that would be very much appreciated. We are leaving at 9am and returning around midday.
Also, I forgot to put a blog post up about homework, but just so you know, English - Lets keep working on those spellings with Spellodrome! If you don't have access to a computer, then you can do it at school. You need to write 5 sentences with any 5 words from Spellodrome. We'll be having a test on the stage 3 list Wednesday next week. Maths is the grid method multiplication sheet that we wrote as a class - you must do a minimum of any 4 of those questions, but I am expecting most of you to be able to do most of them!

Maths: Consolidation week - a week of reviewing and deepening our understanding in various areas of Maths, particularly reasoning skills. Found this fun little website for improving all areas of Maths. You just need to provide an email address so it can keep track of your prgoress for you, but it's absolutely free. It also has a Reading section, but I haven't had chance to explore that yet - give it a go and tell me what you think!

School Newspaper Report
One of America's most famous Christmas trees, the Rockfeller Center Christmas Tree in New York, has arrived from Pennsylvania, to it's new home in Mid-Manhatten! The Norway spruce stands 75 feet tall and is roughly 50 feet in diameter.
It's set to be decorated with more than 50,000 lights and topped with a Swarovski star.The tree will be illuminated on the 29th of November and remain on display until 7th of January. It will then be donated to a charity to be transformed into wood for building homes.

If there are any particularly good bakers (or not so good... we're not picky ) amongst our parents, we would love to have you give us a hand this week with our enterprise! We will be making giant plain cookies and then melting chocolate and making them half-dipped - an extra pair of hands would be greatly appreciated!
Don't forget, this Wednesday afternoon all parents are welcome to join us for a lesson on fractions. If you won't be able to make it, but would like to know what a typical maths lesson looks like - just pop in and I'll give you a copy of the annotated lesson plan that I'll be handing out on Wednesday.

GPS: Semi-colon pauses
Maths: Multiplication - Area - use this to explore area. For a bonus challenge try colouring in the squares different colours and find the area of the whole shape you create, but then also try working out what fraction of the shape you have coloured in (for example) pink!

Homework, by Miss Reynolds

Maths homework this week is all about drawing the fractions - We've had a bit of trouble getting our head round fractions over the last few days, so it is a simple drawing exercise, but the important bit is the explaining the drawings. Children can write notes to explain what they have done, or can wait until we talk about them in class to verbally explain what they have done. There is also a spicy multiplication and division homework that children are free to grab off me if they'd like it! It's a photocopy, so I won't bother trying to take a picture and put a blurry one up here - just ask if you want one.
For English, I have sent home some spellings to learn. They are silent letter spellings and we did them last half-term, so I'm hoping they shouldn't be too hard to learn! I have noticed that I have (rather ironically) made a mistake on the hand out... it is meant to say "there'll be a test" not "they'll be a test". Apparently, Miss Reynolds can't talk and write simultaneously!

This week in year 5, we have been doing lot's of ART! We have been drawing the Houses Of Parliment. We sketched part or all of the Houses Of Parliment and everyone included the tiniest bits of detail for example: The spikes on top of most of the Houses Of Parliment, The Numbers / Roman Numerals on Big Ben (a.k.a. Elizabeth Tower). In Science, we have been learning about reversable & irreversible changes. We learnt that salt is a reversable from :
Salt Water →Salt Salt→Salt Water and lots of other reversible changes. Extra Info: Water To Steam = evaperation, steam to ice= sublimation and vice verca, steam to water= condensation, water to ice= freezing, ice to water= melting. while we were learning about reversible changes, we learnt about kg into stone and °F to °C. We have had a great time this week and can't wait for next week!

This week is Parliament week at school, so in amongst all of our usual learning, there will also be lots of learning about Parliament - if you have stories/pictures/expertise in this area, we woud love to hear from you this week! Just pop in on Monday morning and we can arrange a time for you to come in during the week and share your knowledge with us!
I know a few parents have been asking after the data from check up week, it will be sent out this week!
Also, on Friday, we will be going down to the Brickcroft to get some inspiration for our writing and our Art by getting out and about in a bit of nature... It's a busy week!

This weeks homework for Maths is a photocopy sheet - A is mild, B is medium and C is spicy. I'd like you to do at least one question from each section and one whole section. For example, all of B and one question from A and one from C.
For English homework, I would like you to all log on to Spellodrome and practice the spelling words (I'm going to test you on Tuesday, but don't worry I don't expect you to learn all of them! We will do the same test in a couple weeks and see how we've improved, hopefully). Also, I would like you to choose any 5 words from the list and write them in a sentence in your homework book. 😊 Have a lovely weekend!

This week in Year 5, We have been doing D&T. In D&T, we have been taste testing biscuits including: Outstanding Oreo's, Marvelous Malted Milks, Crumbly custard creams and Munching Marylands. In English, we have been reading todler books YES TODLER BOOKS! The reason why we are reading todler books is to improve our inference skils and to tell the difference between linear and Non-linear storys. (We have read Mr. Large in charge and voices in the park)

Charity videos, by Miss Reynolds

We have been looking at persuasion this term and we've tried to make our own videos to persuade people to vote for our chosen charities. The children researched and selected there own charities and took charge of all the filming process. We hope you like them! Tomorrow we're showing them to year four and letting them vote on which one they like the most! The winning team will get £5 donated to their charity! Who would you vote for?

This week in our Jigsaw session we have been thinking about keeping ourselves safe on bonfire night. We have discussed the history of bonfire night and learnt about the laws and regulations linked to firewo4ks in this country. Our main focus has been firework safety and the children have been give a challenge to complete a presentation for the Department of Firework Safety. This week is check-up week, so it will run a little differently from normal weeks. So in terms of tests, it will look like this:
Monday: Arthimetic paper & Grammar and Punctuation paper
Tuesday: Maths Reasoning A paper & Spelling paper
Wednesday: Maths Reasoning B paper & Reading paper
Then there all done and dusted for this half term! In amongst the tests, we will have our usual timetable which will include the following:
English: Creating persuasive short-films for a charity of the childrens choice and looking at some poetry.
GPS: Pointless game grammar
Maths: Review and consolidation of this terms Maths that we have covered
Science: Working scientifically and the importance of observation/asking questions
Computing: Research using search engines and considering relevance of websites & using excel to present data.
PSHE: Jigsaw - British Values
French: Introductions
PE: Gymnastics and Cricket.
