Assembly blog, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 27th Apr 2018 @ 7:32am

Friendship was the theme in today's assembly. When we walked into the hall there was a question, that question was what does being a good friend mean to you ? We  had a challenge where we had to finish a sentence with a different thing about our friends. One of the sentence starters was my friend is different to me because... we came up with because we are all unique! We then had some time to think about the qualities of our best friend. Good friends listen, so we looked at, the rules of listening. The rules of listening are: be still, look at the speaker, nod and look interested and ask questions that relate on what the speaker is saying. We were talking about how a good friend says nice things to us and how it makes us feel happy. We said that you can give your friends a positive stroke. We don't physically stroke them, but we give them a compliment or say well done. This makes the person you said it to feel happy, just like when you stroke a cat, it feels good and makes them happy and purr.

Wonderful Wednesday!, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 25th Apr 2018 @ 3:47pm

The Penguins enjoyed a busy day today, preparing healthy snacks as part of our Jigsaw work (and teatsing them of course!) and a visit from the fire service.

This morning we were busy chopping, scooping and preparing our healthy snacks, popcorn raisins, veggie dip, avocado dip, fruity scones and fruit kebabs. The best bit was tasting them this afternoon and voting for our favourite, it was...fruit kebabs ,closely followed by popcorn raisins.

This afternoon we had a visit from the fire service talking to the children about fire safety. Homework check up, does your child know their address and have you checked your smoke alarm recently? It would be useful to discuss a fire plan with the children , just in case.

Mondays assembly blog, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 23rd Apr 2018 @ 8:09pm

Blog written by our year 6 PSHE leaders

Today's assembly was about what does loneliness feel like? Loneliness may be when you are homeless , alone and left out. The U.K., sadly, has loneliness problems. Many people assume that it is just elderly people who are lonely, but 1 in 20 Young people have actually said they are lonely, they are the heart of the problem. Some of the cause of being lonely are if you are starting a new school or if you are just naturally shy. We looked at some pictures with groups of children in them, we had to think, which child was feeling lonely, on one, one of the people were on there own, so we knew that that child was lonely. We then looked at a letter in which a mum had wrote about her daughter because she was shy, had no brother or sisters and the mum was asking for advice. Once we had read the letter we thought of ways we would include the little girl. We had lots of ideas like: invite her to parties, ask her to play a game with you in the playground and make the effort. We got set a challenge to look out for people who were a bit lonely in the playground and see if they would like to play a game with you. We also need to remember that sometimes people aren't lonely, they might just want some alone time.

Weather forecasters, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 23rd Apr 2018 @ 5:03pm

Today the Penguins enjoyed being weather forecasters for the day. As you can imagine we a lot of interesting weather going on in the United Kingdom! we also used a map of the United Kingdom to find the 4 countries and their capitals ,which can you remember?

Tomorrow they will be creating even more interesting weather as we create a weather forecast for Chew and Swallow from our story Cloudy with a chance of meatballs.

In Maths today we looked at finding fractions of amounts and making the link with division. Later on in the week we will be looking at position and direction.

We will be creating some healthy snacks in our Jigsaw work and voting for our favourites.

On Wednesday afternoon we have a visit from the fire service for our fire safety talk.

A parent mail was sent out about changing reading books on Thursday instead of Friday for this week only.

Happy reading!

Thursday assembly blog, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 20th Apr 2018 @ 7:07am

In assembly today we started off thinking about the word devotion and what are we devoted to. We shared our thoughts about how we know someone I'd devoted to a football team or a pop band. We listened to a story from India. This story happened 300 years ago! In our reflection we thought about some famous words one of the gurus in our story said. We also thought about how we can be brave and little things we would do that we were, in the past, afraid to do.

Today in our jigsaw assembly we learnt about friendships and relationships. Our title in jigsaw this half term is about friendships. We were talking about how baking a chocolate cake is like making a new friend. We put in our suggestions about the ingredients of a friendship, we had: loyalty, kindness, fun, and a friend that is always our friend. We had some time to think about if we had been kind to our friends today. We always have to remember to listen to our friends, to share with our friends, be kind to our friends and of course have fun with our friends!

Today's assembly was about, how much of our lives should we share with others? In the news this week it said about how lots of people's private information was leaked all over Facebook. We learnt about how things in the past have now changed, like how in the past we would go to the travel agents if we wanted to go on holiday, but now we can go onto the internet and book there instead. We have also been thinking about how you would act in different situations like how you would act when arguing with your brother or sister. Facebook is now thinking about a messenger app for kids, as lots of adults use it. Parents will be able to look at what their child has been doing on this app. It will allow children to communicate even if they do not have a phone number. Our reflection today was about the rules of law and we had a lot of questions.

This week so far...., by Mrs Pratten

Date: 17th Apr 2018 @ 4:43pm

This week we have enjoyed the story of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter, we designed a wanted poster and practised our 4 types of  sentences using the story.

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 13th Apr 2018 @ 4:10pm

As part of our geography work we read the story Cloudy with a chance of meatballs. In the story the it rains orange juice, snows mashed potato and storms hamburgers! We discussed what this would feel like and thought ,sounds good but maybe not! Especially when it all goes wrong and the food becomes huge and stays the same. We designed our own Island of Stew and used a key to add things, we came up with some great ideas.

We also really enjoyed looking on Google Earth at Longton, we zoomed in on the school, the park and the Brickcroft as well as the village itself ,discussing what we could see. They were all super to keen to find their houses but obviously weall could not. Have a go at the weekend exploring Google Earth and see what you can find out about where you live.

Welcome back!, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 10th Apr 2018 @ 7:07pm

I hope the children have all had a good rest and most seem to be fully recovered from all their coughs and colds , thank goodness!

This Week the children have been enjoying the story The Monster Machine and have been busy creating horrible monster recipes which, when put in a machine, makes monsters. We had fun today drawing and describing the types of monsters that they had created. Tomorrow we are going to think about the monster land where they live.

In Maths we have been adding, using our knowledge of number bonds  to try to help. Tomorrow we will be adding 2 digit numbers together by partitioning.

We started our Geography work on weather  today,  looking at the different types of weather, what we can do in that weather and what our favourite weather is.

We also looked at a map of the United Kingdom and discussed the 4 countries that make it up and also the 4 compass points. We had fun acting out different weather, using props for others to guess what the weather was and why. Can you guess?!
