Hello All,
I hope that you have enjoyed the weekend!
This is what the Penguins will be doing this week. This week is called our check-up week so we will be doing assessments throughout the week.
English |
We will do two reading comprehension papers and a big write. |
Maths |
We will do two maths papers - a reasoning paper and an arithmetic paper. |
Reading |
We will do individual reading colour book band assements as appropriate. |
GPS |
We will do one combined grammar, punctuation and spelling assessment. |
Phonics |
We will not do a formal phonics assessment as our phonics screening check is only one month away. |
Class Assembly |
We hope you can make it to our class assembly - Percy's Bumpy Ride - at 9am on Thursday 18th May. |
Sports Day |
It's our first attempt of Sports Day on Friday afternoon - fingers crossed for sunshine! |

This is what the Penguins will be working on this week:
Maths |
We are learning to identify, name and describe the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. |
English |
We are focusing upon non-fiction texts again. We are reading another Barnaby Bear big book about badgers and then making our own baddgers booklets. |
Phonics |
We are applying all the graphemes for each of the vowel sounds that we know in reading and writing. This is in preparation for our Phonics Screening Check. There was a letter and parent mail about this. If you have not received it, please let me know! |
Grammar |
We are learning about different sentence types: command, statement, question and exclamation. |
Class Assembly |
We are preparing for our class assembly. Well done to all the children who have already learned all of their lines! We are enjoying preparing for the assembly. |
Handwriting |
We are practising zig-zag letters. |
Move a Mile |
We are continuing to do our daily Move a Mile in the afternoons. Last week, we enjoyed running in the sunshine on the field! |

We read a Barnaby Bear book to learn a little about a village in Norway. We compared the Norwegian village with Longton. Wonderful collaborative work!

This week we are preparing for our class assembly on Friday 12th May!
English |
We are learning about Barnaby Bear's travels and making our own information booklet about Longton for him. |
Maths |
We are learning about capacity and reading scales in litres and millilitres. We will also be practising addition and subtraction including missing number questions. |
Phonics and GPS |
Mrs Gray's group are reading and writing polysyllabic words. Miss Adamson's group are learning about homophones. |
Handwriting |
We are continuing to work our way through groups of letters. |
Move a mile |
We are continuing to practise our move a mile daily. |
Class Assembly |
We are using our time in the afternoons to prepare for our class assembly. |

I hope that you have settled into the school routine nicely! I really enjoyed reading your holiday passports and the writing that the children did about their holiday on Tuesday. All of the children had lots of exciting things to talk about!
Here's the plan for this week:
Maths |
In maths we're practising addition and subtraction in the context of data analysis.We'll be reading block graphs, comparing numbers and calculating with the data. |
English |
In English we will be studying Percy the Park Keeper again. We'll focus on The Bumpy Ride, this week. At the end of the week we will write our own Percy the Park Keeper story. |
Phonics |
Mrs Gray's grouping are learning some alternative spellings for sounds we already know. Miss Adamson's group are using suffixes for spelling (where there is a change to the root word). |
Handwriting |
In handwriting we are continuing to work through the groups of letters that we began last week. |
Science |
In science we are identifying and classfying objects and materials. |
PE |
In PE we will review catching a ball and learn to bounce a ball. |
Geography |
We will make a map of our school. |
Run |
We will continue to do our daily 15 minute run which we began last Thursday. |

Maths |
We are learning about number and place value. We are reviewing the difference between tens and ones and finding ten more and ten less. |
English |
We are reading Percy the Park Keeper stories, writing questions, learning about the main character and planning our own story. |
Phonics and GPS |
Mrs Gray's group and Miss Adamson's group are revising alternative spellings. Miss Adamson's group are also practising spelling words with double consonants and contractions and revising different word types which we learned about before the holidays. |
Handwriting |
We are practising letter formation of different groups of letters (curly caterpillars, ladder letters, zig-zag monsters and one-armed robots. |
PE |
We are learning about catching. |
Science |
We are beginning to learn about objects as part of our materials topic. |
Curriculum letter will come home in book bags this week. I'll pop an electronic copy on the class page.

We had a wonderful time at The Harris Museum today. We made a toy timeline, made a peg doll, played with some old toys and drew pictures so that we remember what we learned.

I hope that you have enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend! We have been very fortunate.
In the final week of term before the Easter break we will be spending some time learning about Easter and Spring.
Maths |
In Maths we will finish our work on telling the time by drawing hands on a clock face. We will move on to measuring time in seconds, minutes and hours. On Friday, we will do a speedy review of measuring mass and weight. |
English |
In English we will be studying the Easter story. We will learn about the symbols of Easter and why they are special to make a booklet. We will read about the Easter story and do some writing about the Easter story using our neatest handwriting.. |
Phonics |
Mrs Gray's group will be practising recognising phase 5 sounds in words for reading and using phase 5 sounds to write words. Miss Adamson's group will be learning about adjectives and revising nouns and verbs. They will also continue to do speedy phase 5 reviews. |
Handwriting |
We will practise forming the digits 7-9 and 0. |
Science |
We are looking for signs of Spring and creating our own Spring windows. |
Art |
We are learning about the world's most expensive eggs - Fabergé eggs! We will try to create our own versions. |
Music |
It is our last chance to practise our song for the Easter service in church! We hope that you will enjoy it. |
Assembly |
On Friday afternoon we hope to see you in church for our Easter service. |
Trip |
On Tuesday morning we are going to the Harris Museum and Gallery to learn about old fashioned toys. We will leave school at 0915 and will head back at 1145. We will have lunch in school as normal. If you haven't given permission yet, please give you forms to myself or Anna on Monday. |

This week we are practising writing numbers accurately. |

We are preparing a little something for Mother's Day. |

We are still dancing! |

We are doing our final lesson about Buddhism. We will be learning about how to be a good friend. |

In RE we learned about the story of Buddha and the Injured Swan. Buddhists try to treat animals with compassion as equals. We made origami swans and retold the story.
