Year 7: The Penguins: Blog items
County Hall Visit, by Mrs Fletcher

On Wednesday members of our school parliament visited County Hall. They listened to a presentation about how Lancashire County Council works delivered by Josh Mynott. The presentation took place in the council chamber. The children were joined by County Councillor Graham Gooch who is also a governor of our school and by County Councillor Jayne Rear who is the lead member for Young People. The children learnt a lot about Lancashire and the work of the council during their visit.

To start off the new week as always, we investigated our new spellings (inactive, incapable, incredible, inaccurate, irregular, irrational, irresponsible, irresistible) We then put them into sentences.
Next is P.E and this week in it we tried to put 3 balances into a sequence together with a partner which was easy for some and more challenging for others. In fitness Mr Pearson has started a bleep test running.
In writing, we wrote a longer piece of independent writing based on a continuation of a story of a person who was in danger.
In English for this week we learnt about similes and how we can use them to extend description in our writing. We also investigated fronted adverbials linked to our focus text. In the next days we were doing lots of thing about our story for the week The Mousehole Cat and first we wrote a diary of the man Tom in the story and then on Friday we wrote bits of description for our own story that we will do next week.
Moving onto maths, we were learning multiplying and dividing by different numbers.
Almost at the end is Music, using our recorders we learnt the note G and this week’s special people are Emily who got the music badge and then the person who got the recorder case was Joel
Nearly to finish is Art and in this week we tried do printing and how this works is we draw in pencil and then it prints onto the other side were ink is.
Lastly, is French and in that lesson we learnt all about Vegetables in French

Handstand week, by Mr Pearson

At the beginning of the week like always we have our new weekly spellings and we had to know the and putting them into sentences. Our weekly spellings are inactive, incapable, incredible, inaccurate, irregular, irrational, irresponsible, irresistible E.G The cake was so irresistible, I had to have another slice.
In P.E, Mr Pearson taught us how to do hand stands ( Mr Pearson didn’t demonstrate himself! ) and almost all of us could do one at the end of the lesson but some of us need practice on our landing (on our feet) Mr Pearson didn’t demonstrate himself!
In maths this week we did a lot of work on measuring. At the start of the week on Monday we practiced measuring in cm and km. Moving to Tuesday learnt about measuring the perimeter of a 2D shape. Skipping on to Friday we tried to calculate the perimeter of shapes with missing distances.
In art, we used pen to draw the outline of the fruit or veg and coloured it in with paint with the colour if we had time to.
Moving on to Music, we learnt the note G and in the half term holidays Mrs Bolton went shopping to get tow prizes for two people, one of them was like a silver star but it was a music note and also she bought a recorder case that had a tune on it. Bethany played us friar jacka and she played some notes that none of us knew so she won recorder case. After that Oliver played his Cornet, so he had to get the music badge.
Many of the tribe had an enjoyable time at the school Halloween disco this week, some scary outfits on show!

We have enjoyed two sessions of practical maths this week one on time and another playing board games and using online maths games to learn the times tables.

At the start of the week in Grammar we started off doing suffixes adding ing, er, est and then transferring our understanding in our writing. We have also used expanded noun phrases to use in our English. In English we did imperative verbs to put into sentences with our English topic the shirt machine
The guided reading we have been completing comprehension and looking at being detectives looking for clues in the text.
In writing we have been studying about explanation text’s and have written two of our own.
In maths our main thing was learning time. We got the clocks out and Mr Pearson said a time and we had work it out plus we had a work sheet to work out the time and the time could have been a 24hour clock. Please can you all practice at home.
In science we learnt how the ear works and drew a diagram looking at the outer ear with the ear canal, the middle ear with the three bones and the inner ear looking at the cochlea.
In French we put all the things we have done into a wanted poster of anyone in the class. In art we finished off any work not completed.

What A busy week we had, look at all this learning!
At the start of the week Mr Kennedy came in to do some modal verbs with sentences e.g. I might skip, I can skip, I can’t skip. On Tuesday we had a look at noun phrases putting them into sentences. Moving on to Wednesday, we did suffixes. This was in addition to looking at explanation texts using a short film called the shirt maker as inspiration.
In maths we have been learning about angles and know right angles obtuse and acute and then on Thursday we learnt how to multiply and divide decimals by 10,100 and 1000. We keep on practising the times tables.
In art this week, we did oil pastes to shade different fruits and veg to smudge colours
In P.E. active maths, we did sums with cones to see if we can find different calculations.
In Mr Pearson’s PE we are continuing to learn about attack and defence skills, this time using bench ball. We also had another circuit training lesson.
In music we studied some tunes and also learning the note A.
In French this week, we used colures to describe people’s hair colour and eye colour.
In science, we made a sound sandwich out of 2 lolly pop sticks 2 cut up straws 1 thick elastic bands and 2 small elastic bands witch then make a sound sandwich. We then investigated pitch.

Firework safety poster competition, by Mrs Catterall

Sorry this is late notice, time has flown quickly and posters need to be in well before bonfire night to be judged and prizes awarded before the day.
Children from any class can enter. Just create a poster showing how to be safe on bonfire night and bring it to school on Monday to be sent off to Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
Last year we had an overall winner in school, it would be great if someone from Longton could win a prize.

As part of our science learning about sound we made our own musical instrument.

In English this week we have focused on diaries. Mr Pearson shared a pretend diary entry from Mrs Thomson who spread blue hand prints around school! On Friday we wrote an imaginary diary entry and let our imaginations run wild.
In grammar we have been studying synonyms for said e.g. bellowed, whispered. In addition we have used subordinating conjunctions to write complex sentences. An example ….
Oliver ran quickly across the road because there was a tiger after him.
For Maths we were solving tricky puzzles like pyramid’s using our addition and subtraction skills. We even had a visit form Mrs Brown to demonstrate our amazing learning.
In topic we studied the Saturn 5 rocket that took the astronauts to the moon. We watched the launch and investigated the different parts of the space ship. After this the Penguins designed their own Space rocket.
In music on the recorder we learnt the note B.
In art, every week we use a different type of medium and this week we used pencil crayons to draw different types of fruits.
In French, we did an activity sheet to describe each other.
Mr Pearson spent Wednesday in Burnley making links with a school that the Penguins will be joining in activities through this year.

Macmillan coffee morning and book read, by Mrs Catterall

What an amazing morning. We were completely blown away by the number of visitors this morning. Thank you to everyone who came along to support this event, there was plenty of cake for everyone. The children enjoyed reading with their parents/grandparents, reading with the younger children or sat on a bean bag, taking off their shoes and sharing a book with their friends. Thankyou also to the parents who helped our amazing charity ambassadors and heads team.
We had lots of amazing cakes for our moon/space themed competition. There are some very talented bakers out there. The charity ambassadors had some difficult decisions to make when choosing the winner from each class. The winners were informed in assembly today and prizes given out. All children who took part will receive a special certificate later this week.
We will let you know the total amount once it has been totalled up.

In maths, this week we were learning about standard subtraction methods.We also were learning about standard decimal addition methods.
In grammar, we were studying contractions's lerning how to put them in the right place and how to spell them. We did sentance openers to help us write better sentances and to help us whith Fronted adverbials.
In English,we all learned about said synonyms because said is a boring word.
This week in topic,we learned about the different phases of the moon and moved onto learn about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin and the apollo 11 mission.
In science,we started learning about sound and first we went around school listening to the sounds that we could hear and we found out that the y5 and 6 boys bathroom was the loudest we also learnt about that sound is caused by vibrations.

Next year we will be exploring moon landings as part of our Geography, Science and Maths work. Dragons, by Mrs Catterall

Wow, what a week we have had so far! The Penguins have been amazing. The theme this week has been Dragons. We have looked at the book, Tell me a dragon. From this we have matched up dragon descriptions, created landscapes for our dragons to live, designed a dragon and started to create a passport for it. We have developed our drawing and colouring techniques by creating design ideas for a dragon's eye. We then made them out of clay - they are fabulous. Next week we aim to paint them, write a dragon story and perform a poem 'The dragon who ate our school'. Keep checking back for more photos as we come,eye our projects. You will be so proud of them, I am.

Skeleton, by Mrs Catterall

This week we have been learning about our skeletons.
We started off by drawing what we thought our skeleton would look like. We then had a pile of bones to place on our skeleton where we thought they would go. Finally we played a relay game looking at a skeleton with its bones in the right places and then running back to our skeleton and moving 1 bone at a time. We discussed what our bones are like, what their purpose is and raised a few wonder questions.
