Year 2 - The Lions: Blog items

First days back, by Mrs Pratten

Welcome back, hope everyone had a great break and made the most of the sunny days we had. We have been busy starting our new science topic which is looking at materials. We walked around school and took photos of objects we could see and talked about what they were made out of.

Today we enjoyed our visit to the library where we listened to some superhero stories and made an octopus.

We loved using the apparatus in our gymnastic lesson, we travelled in different ways, practised our jumping, rolling and balancing.

In Maths we were measuring using a ruler and learning about cm

In computing we used all our digital art skills to create our own pictures in the style of the different artists. They looked great!

Well done everyone who made a fabulous Easter bonnet... glad I didn’t have to choose a winner...they were all fantastic.

We have enjoyed measuring in maths this week. Comparing heights and length and measuring using cubes and paper clips.

Guess who is the tallest and shortest in our class?

Today we had fun making our Easter cards, they look great ! 

 A big thank you to those children who bought in christening photos and objects, we loved looking at them ...not too late to share if you have some at home!

Today we finally made our smoothies! We had to peel, chop, grate our fruit and veg. Then into the blender and then tasting. Most of us thought they tasted yummy even if they looked a funny colour!

This week so far the Lions Have enjoyed recording how their seeds have grown and changed.Creatiing more digital art in the style of Kandinsky, concentric circles. 

In Maths we are investigating mass, heavy and light, and how we know , we have enjoyed comparing the weights of objects and using the balance scales

Today in gymnastics we created sequences , a balance, a roll and travelling.

We are enjoying our DT this week , making smoothies ( tomorrow!) first we explored fruit and vegetables and sorted them Is a cucumber a fruit or vegetable? Is rhubarb a fruit  or vegetable? Ask your lion!!!! 

Yesterday we looked at where they grow, trees and vines, on or underground.Today we tasted them so we could choose which smoothie we wanted to make.

Their positive character trait Mr Men/Little Miss characters were put on a t.shirt for them to wear with pride.

Computer whizzes!, by Mrs Pratten

We enjoyed our computer lesson again this week, learning about another artist Matisse. We used a paint programme to draw and fill our shapes  to create artwork in the style of “The Snail”. We think we did a good job! 

In maths we have been working out where numbers go on a number line by estimating, science work this week, we started to think about every green trees and deciduous trees.

Our sunflowers have grown not so much but are getting stronger.

The Lions have been looking after our sunflowers with a spot of watering. They are growing really well!

In Maths we have been learning about tens and ones, how many tens, how many ones and partitioning into 2 parts. Some children investigated what numbers they could make and what they couldn’t with the tens and ones they had.

In English we have planned our own stories based on Handas Hen.We were excited today to start writing them in our special books.

We have had a wonderful world book today. The children all looked fabulous and loved sharing their favourite books with their friends.

We wrote a postcard from a cold where’s Wally  location and managed to spot him too! We made a book mark and enjoyed an eye spy activity. A lovely day!

This week we have been busy starting our new topics. In science this half term we are finding out all about plants. We looked at different seeds, talked about where seeds come from and planted some sunflower seeds . We are going to observe how they grow each week and what they need to help them.

In History we looked at different bridges and thought about which was the oldest and which was the newest.We matched up who we thought had designed each bridge.

In computing we learnt how to use a paint programme and created some fun pictures!

Apologies for the delay - the website has been down - we had a great walk to the Brickcroft at the end of last half term, spotting lots of signs of winter. We enjoyed our hot chocolate to warm us up!

Busy, busy!, by Mrs Pratten

This week the lions enjoyed working with a friend to design a wellie boot. They had to talk to each other, share ideas  and take turns.

In maths we have been using the tens and ones to help us to understand place value. We had to make numbers from 11 - 20 with the tens and ones and record what number we had  made. 

In Geography we learnt about the Equator and it affects how hot and cold places are, as well as reminding ourselves of the 7 continents.

The Lions settled back to school really well and enjoyed starting their new topcs, science -describing animals and Geography - learning about the world and the 7 continents.

We also recapped our shape work, naming, describing and sorting 3D shapes.

Dont forget to complete a project which will be shared on parents evenings, coming up later this half term. They can be last half terms learning, the seasons, Longton or this half terms learning,outlined on the attached subject organiser for Spring 1. 

I have attached some badges for you to complete at home too,  book worm, bake off and scientist. Complete the tasks and return to school for me to check and tick off. You can then order your badge at the office.

A big thank you from myself and Mrs Regan for our lovely Christmas gifts, we both feel very spoilt and it is not expected but much appreciated, so thank you very much.

We had a great walk to the Brickcroft this morning looking for sons of Autumn and human and physical features of Longton. It was certainly Autumnal with gusts of winds and lots of leaves blowing!

On Tuesday we enjoyed a dance session, we learnt a short routine , it was fun!

In maths we have continued using ten frames to help us solve part part whole problems.

We have been busy learning songs for our Christmas production , keep reading through any lines you have , you are doing great! A letter has gone out with what you might need to provide, any questions please just ask.

Next week on Thursday we are walking down to the Brickcroft , you are welcome to join us?for OK weather.

The Lions have settled well back into school routine and have been working hard, definitely some fantastic learning going on!

In Science we have started to think about what the different seasons are and how we know, it has definitely felt colder this week.

In history we discovered why we celebrate bonfire night, what can your child remember, remember about the 5 th November?

Have a good time celebrating but remember to keep safe.
