As part of Longton Primary Schools Platinum Jubilee Celebrations the children in Y2 - Y6 have been joined together in the afternoons to focus on our performance for local dignities and special guests. The children have performed a drama about the Queen, the school choir has sung a number of songs including the National Anthem, a group of children performed a dance including a dance from each decade of the Queen's reign, poetry has been written and performed, decorations have been made for the VIP's tables and finally a good of children have baked and created sandwiches for an afternoon tea. Reception performed a song and dance and Year 1 showed how creative they have been through arts.

Another creative day today! The children have worked on designing beach view sketches and using different shading techniques, painting techniques with acrylics and watercolours and pencils.
We have also been making clay sculptures ready for our photo shoot tomorrow.

A lovely start to, what will be, a very creative week. We started our day by understanding what the Platinum Jubilee actually meant by exploring Queen Elizabeth II's journey before and during her reign. We took inspiration from the infamous side profile photo of The Queen to inspire silhouette work. We also designed our own coasters, created our own bookmarks and finally we created coloured sand ready for our Antony Gormley inspired work tomorrow.

Needless to say, how all the adults and peers at Longton are so incredibly proud of The Penguins tribe for working through their SATs last week and showing great determination. We have had a busy week this week once again, with lots of learning taking place. The children have been writing narratives on The Island of Gulag! They have also been doing Bikeability, Science & rugby - have a look at some of these lessons in action HERE
World Book Day 2022, by Mrs Fletcher

What a wonderful day we have had celebrating world book day !
The day started with a whole school assembly to introduce the teme and to share a story we wrote as a school in 2020. It was also when the stimulus for this year's whole school write was revealed. Our youngest children, the Lions started the story and it was then emailed from class to class to be developed. It finally reached year 6 this afternoon and they proofread the story and then added to it. At 2.45 we met back in the hall for the world premiere reading of The Magic Potion. Wow !!!! What a story! Well done, again Longton. Please take some time to share the story as a a family and to ask your child which part their class wrote.
Every class has met up via an online meeting with classes at Barden Primary School in Burnley and Reception and Key Stage 1 have had a visit from Librarian Tom.
At Longton, as well as the World Book Day voucher we like to give the children a book as a gift. Your child will have a lovely book in their book bags this evening. Please enjoy reading them.

The Penguin's have been very busy since we returned to school following half term
They have taken part in a webinair on gender stereotypes and another on STEM careers. They have also had a visit from Reece Taylor who spoke to them about living with cerebal palsy. He really was an inspitration to the whole class. We have started a new unit of work in English - Autobiographies and biograpahies- looking at the diary of Anne Frank. This has led to some outstanding discussions about life in Nazi controlled areas during World War 2. Outstanding links to previous learning in History.
In maths they are concentrating on fine tuning their arithmetic skills becoming more accuate in the use of timestables to successfully divide numbers to 2 digits.
Spelling is currently being develpoed through lots of investigations and through a daily morning task revising phase 5 phonics. Yesterday and this morning we have compared the use of traditional book format and online dictionaries whilst invsetigating prefixes and root words.

Today in assembly on Tuesday we talked about, animals and how they are the same and if they work well together. The animals we saw were penguins, dolphins and whales, zebras and ostriches and a crocodile and a bird. We also talked about when it’s important to work together.
Our Thursday picture news assembly asked the question ‘What type of events do you think deserve a celebration?’ This question came about as the Queen announced a special competition ahead of her Platinum Jubilee later this year. On the 6th February Queen Elizabeth will have reigned for 70 years!
The competition is to design a pudding. There will also be a 4 day bank holiday in June and other events too. We all like celebrating birthdays and weddings and fireworks.

In our assembly on Tuesday, we talked about a picture and how old it was and how we knew it was old then Mrs Catterall told us a story about the boy in the old picture. Next, we saw a picture of a light bulb, then an old film projector, after we saw a picture of a phonograph and a gramophone. We then discovered that the boy in the first picture was Thomas Edison and he invented all of the other items in the pictures. We discussed how he would have needed to work hard, that there would have been failures along the way but he kept going. We reflected on when we have had to be like Thomas Edison today and how if we come across something which is tricky or hard work we shouldn’t give up.
In our assembly on Thursday we talked about Rose off strictly come dancing and how well she did because she is part deaf. We also talked how many people want to learn sign language. This is in the news because people were voting for it to be recognised as an official language in law. We also asked if anyone knew any parts of sign language, year 3 and year 4 performed the rainbow song to the school, they have been learning it during their LPS+ lessons. We also talked about which is more important touch, sound, smell, taste, hear or sight.

In our assembly on Tuesday we focused on dreams and goals. We are learning to face the big fears of our mountains / challenges. We read a story about a rescue dog that helps in the cold misty mountains and a little boys life, that story taught us not to give up.
On Thursday we had our picture news assembly with the question - is it ever fair to treat others differently because of their looks? We discussed that a Chinese footballer had to cover up his tattoo and he had no choice. We also thought about other jobs like nurses, soldiers and chefs etc. We talked about how it’s not right to judge people by their looks or their culture.

On Tuesday in assembly, we were taking about what our Jigsaw lessons are all about - Friendships, how to be respectful, ways to keep safe, working together as a team, how our bodies change as we get older. This half term our topic is all about dreams and goals. We also mentioned what we might want to do in the future for a job. We thought about how the journey to this might be a bit of a roller coaster, there can be ups and downs and sometimes people change direction to end up doing a different job than the one they first wanted. But all the way we have to remember our learning powers to work hard and self improve, to show commitment, resilience and perseverance.
On Thursday our picture news assembly was all about the James Webb Telescope. This is in the news this week because NASA have sent it up into space to find out what our Universe looks like.
I wonder if when we grow up we might get to go into space ourselves. Does anyone want to be an astronaut? Scientists, engineers, designers will all work together to design the space telescope, it takes a long time to create and test. These people both boys and girls will have had to use their learning powers like we talked about in assembly on Tuesday.

We hope you all had a safe, warm and loving Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
It goes without saying, that I am very happy to be back in the classroom with the wonderful Penguin Tribe and they truly have shone this week.
We began our term on World Braille Day, as we tried to understand more about how blind and/or visually impaired individuals navigate the world. This lead us into 'Theo's Story' and then into our first book of this term, The Black Book of Colours.

Trip to Blackpool to watch Aladdin, by Mr Pearson

Today the whole school got on 3 double deckers and travelled to Blackpool Globe Theatre pleasure land to watch Aladdin. We all had a fabulous time thank you very much to all our volunteers who came to help and to Anna for organising.

A Busy Few Weeks, by Mr Kennedy

The Penguins have been super busy with their learning over the past few weeks. We have been exploring The Nowhere Emporium and continuing to develop our reading. The children have been working on their big writing techniques - writing both about The Nowhere Emporium and Midas Touch!
We have been consolidating our learning of place value and rounding and this week exploring new concepts in relation to algebra and algebra conventions - great work across all maths these past two weeks Penguins, I am very proud!
In science, we continue to work hard in our exploration of space and the movement of Earth and The Moon.
This week we also had a visitor from a lovely Buddist lady who shared her experiences and techniques to maintain a positive outlook and mindfullness - you can check out our work here.

It's been a great full week back in the year 6 classroom with lots of brainpower!
We have been exploring our new text 'The Nowhere Emporium' in English and investigating key vocabulary and its impact on the reader and the senses.
In Maths we have been deepening our understanding of place values in numbers up to 10,000,000!
History welcomed us to Ancient Greece as we explored the timeline before we delve in further to key events and people.
In Jigsaw, we have been understanding the universal rights of children and where our chocolate comes from. We compared agriculture to farming in the UK.
In Science, we have been exploring and investigating how the Earth, Moon move and their relationship with the Sun - you can have a look at this lesson HERE

The tribe have had a wonderful few days back and we have covered so much! We have recognised our expectations and established new expectations. We have kick-started our science topic, design technology and maths & English. The children have been fantastic and adapted well to get back into a routine. This year truly is going to be fantastic!

Summer Week Five, by Mr Kennedy

Week 5 Summer term
Maths: in maths this week we were using protractors to measure accurate angles. Earlier in the week, we were learning what statistics are and working on our reasoning.
English: In English, we did our big write on our story gorilla and then practised some SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and grammar) and our comprehension skills.
History: In history, we have been studying the English civil war when Oliver Cromwell was alive and his impact on the war and how some of the events were much local than we first thought! Like The Battle of Preston which took place in the now known, Walton-Le-Dale.
PE: In PE this week we were learning how to improve our accuracy in Tennis and rallies.
Drama: In drama this week we tried to make a piece based on the Victorian ages.
Art: In art, we were starting to start the process of making our own mindfulness robots.
Computing: In computing, we were finishing off our coding game code monkey.

Captain Tom 100, by Mr Kennedy

On Friday 30th April, it would have been Captain Sir Tom Moore's 101st Birthday. In memory of his amazing life and amazing goal he set for him self, we thought we'd take our own spin on our own Challenge 100 as the Penguin Tribe!
100 Sentences:
Using an image for inspiration, The Penguins were set a challenge to write 100 sentences inspired by the photo!
100 Lap Challenge
The Penguins were also challenge to run 100 laps around our school track! They absolutely smashed it and achieved their challenge by 13:30! Great job Penguins!
Throughout the day, members of The Penguins tribe set them self some mini-100 challenges!
We had Aiden doing the 100 lego challenge!
Finn and a few friends attempted the 100 doodle challenge!
Theo started the 100 push up challenge and inspired a few other peers to join their challenge!
Anya, Grace and Martha started having a go at the 100 rainbow challenge as well!
Very proud of us all!

Summer Term Week 2
We have all had a lovely week this week, the sun has been shining just as bright as our wonderful tribe. Thankyou for a lovely week Penguins, get plenty of rest and enjoy the sun over the weekend. Mr Kennedy
This week we have explored:
Maths: In maths this week we were learning how to order decimal and later in the week learn how to add and subtract them together, making sure we are really understanding out place value with decimals. We have also been working on our daily fluent in 5!
English: In English this week we had a new story with simple sentences in and tried to make them into complex sentences. This is called sentences stacking. We have been looking at Gorilla and identifying key plot points and how they impact the inner feelings of our main character, Hannah.
We also wrote letters to our partner class, the Puffins at Barden Primary School!
We are really focusing on making sure we have the BEST sentences we can in our writing.
Topic: This week in topic we were learning facts about countries in different continents. We have explored so many countries around the world and are looking forward to learning more about our local history.
Computing: In computing we learnt how to put pictures into a video and write facts about zoo animals.
