Where to start?

Where to start ? really is the question this week as the Hippos have done so much in a week.

On Monday we welcomed Mr Poulson to our tribe. Throughout the week the children have vbeen working with Mr Poulson in Literacy, Numeracy and RE. Learning has been fun especially Literacy where the children are completeing a unit of work on reports. Great fun has been had using Charlie and TheChocolate Factory as the basis for the learning. Lots of opportunities for speaking and listening and for the Hippos to do what they do best act! Friday's news conference seems to have been enjoyed very much and included Mr Poulson wearing a top hat in his role as Mr Wonka. I am really looking forward to seeing the writing that comes from this work.

Science has really got the class talking this week. Making the topic of teeth exciting is a challenge but we Hippos have succeeded. On Tuesday the children were asked to think about a sentence that most parents use regularly-  "Don't have too much of that drink, it's bad for your teeth!"

We decided to test this theory out. Firstly the children set up a control test using boiled eggs, vinegar and water. An egg was placed in an equal amount of liquid and left. The egg shell represents the enamel of the tooth and vinegar represents the acid found in most drinks.

Next the children thought about drinks that we could test, some we know are bad for us and others that are meant to be healthy. The final list was: diet lemonade, coke, diet coke, fresh orange juice, tea, fruit smoothie and diluted vimto.

Each day the children have recorded what has happened and the results have been pretty dramatic. Final observations will be made on Tuesday 29th and we will let you know what we have learnt.

The snow of course provided the children with lots of fun at playtimes and they were all very sensible .

Look out for photos of what happened to our eggy teeth early next week.
