Welcome to the phonics section of the Bongo's class page. Here is some information that you may find helpful in supporting your children with using phonics for reading and writing and in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check on Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th June 2016.

Ten Ideas for Phonics at Home - this handout has some practical phonics games to play at home (I handed these sheets out at the 'Meet the Teacher' event in September.

Phase 5 Sound Mat - this mat includes the sounds that are generally the trickiest for children to learn.

Phonics Screening Check Guide - this includes some additional information for parents about the check.

First 100 High-Frequency Words - these are the most commonly used words in the English language. Therefore, knowing these will increase your children's fluency in reading and writing (N.B. These are not assessed during the phonics screening check).

Help your Child to Read with Phonics - this document tells you a little about how we use phonics to teach children to read and lists all of the 44 phonemes (sounds) that children are expected to learn in Year One.

Consonant Clusters Sound Mat - this covers the consonant clusters that often appear in words children are trying to decode. Consonant clusters can often be tricky for children to blend at first so we recommend practicing them at home.

The Phonics Screening Test app by 'Learn with Pip' is available on iTunes for free and is excellent pracice in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check.
