Parliament Week, by Miss Adamson

Date: 17th Nov 2017 @ 11:12pm

This week is Parliament week. The children asked some questions about what they'd like to know about parliament. We focussed on finding out what it is like inside the Houses of Parliament. Most children would like to be in the House of Lords because of the red seats! We learned about the Queen's messenger, Black Rod, who knocks on the door of the House of Commons. The children compared the difference between the Queen and the Prime Minister and decided who they thought was the most important.

Five children who worked especially hard on their writing today had their faces or hands painted the Head's Team.

Well done Meerkats, you've worked so hard this half-term! This week has been especially busy doing reading, writing, phonics and maths check-ups!

Lots ts went in book bags tonight so, just to check it all made its way home, you should have:

a panto letter

leaflets - billy magician and lime bar

kids club letters (where applicable)

Let me know if anything didn't make its way home and I will find it for you a week on Monday.

PE kits have gone home for a wash. Please send them in on the first day back.

I hope that you will have a wonderful half-term.

Many thanks,

Split pin teddies, by Miss Adamson

Date: 25th Oct 2017 @ 5:18pm

On the theme of toys from the past, we made some split pin teddies. Aren't they great!?

Week Beginning Monday 23rd October 2017, by Miss Adamson

Date: 21st Oct 2017 @ 4:17pm

Hello all :)

I hope that you are enjoying your weekends!

This week is called 'Check-Up Week'. We will all be doing assessments in order to help me to plan the next steps for the children as effectively as possible. This is how the week should look:

Maths

All of the children will do a small arithmetic and reasoning assessment.

Phonics

We will carry on with our daily phonics lessons. Miss Adamson's group will be learning ie (a colourful tie), ue (blue glue), aw (yawn at dawn) and ew (chew the stew). Mrs Thomson's group will be learning oi (spoil the boy), ear (hear with your ear) and air (that's not fair). All the children will also do a short phonics check with Miss Adamson.

Reading

We will have guided reading as usual on Wednesday. In addition, children will do a short reading assessment with Miss Adamson or Mrs Thomson.

Writing

We are doing some special pieces of writing as part of a whole school theme called 'Journey Back in Time'. We will be reading the story of Old Bear and retelling it in our writing.

History

In keeping with Journey Back in Time and Old Bear, we will be learning about toys from the past. We will compare them with toys in the present and create our own timeline.

Homework

This week there will be no homework in the children's purple books. Instead, children will receive their Holiday Passports. During every school holiday (Y1-Y6), children fill in their holiday passport with details of what they have done over the break. We love reading what you have done and it makes for lovely memories to look back on when your child gets to Year 6. Holiday Passports are kept inside the red book bag.

I look forward to seeing you all on Monday!

Miss Adamson :)

P.S. If you have any outstanding toast money to be paid for this past half-term (£7.80). Please send it to school with your child this week.

This is what we are doing this week:

Poetry, by Miss Adamson

Date: 14th Oct 2017 @ 12:58pm

This week the meerkats have written four poems each! They are inspired by Paul Cookson poems that Mrs Thomson and Miss Adamson learned about when we were out of class last Monday. The children wrote That's No Place to Put a Pet, two mini east poems and a riddle. The riddles have been entered into a young writers competition (see www.youngwriters.co.uk/competitions/little-riddlers). I am sure the judges will be astounded by all the children's wonderful writing.

Here re are some pictures of the children looking for inspiration for their mini east poem.

Jigsaw - helping others learn, by Miss Adamson

Date: 14th Oct 2017 @ 12:52pm

We made freeze frames to show how we could help others to learn. The rest of the class guessed what we were doing in the freeze frames.

Hand puppets, by Miss Adamson

Date: 14th Oct 2017 @ 12:47pm

Week Beginning Monday 9th October 2017, by Miss Adamson

Hello all :)

I hope that you are enjoying your weekend.

Miss Adamson's phonics group has completed phase 3 and 4 review. We are focusing on ay (e.g. may I play), ou (e.g. shout it out), ea (e.g. a cup of tea) and oy (e.g. toy for a boy). Mrs Thomson's group are focusing on oa (e.g. goat in a boat), oo (e.g. poo at the zoo), and ar (e.g. start the car).

Handwriting

We are practising cursive letter formation in our special handwriting books and ensuring we are writing using the tripod grip.

Jigsaw

We are making freeze frames in groups that show us making good choices.

Design and Technology

We are designing, making and evaluating superhero hand puppets.

PE

We are learning about balancing and running.

A note about spellings

With your children's spellings, do not worry about getting a new set every week. We are also reviewing their old spellings on a Friday as we find that otherwise we remember the most recent and forget the old. Some of the lists are very tricky so it will take longer than one week of practise to ensure that children are confident in spelling them. Thank you for all your effort. We have been pleasantly surprised by how well the children are doing in the weekly check!

I look forward to seeing you all in the week.

Many thanks,

Miss Adamson
