First day back..., by Mr Coxhead

Date: 12th Jun 2017 @ 10:51am

This morning Year 6 have had a handwriting lesson and are now learning to use calculators effectively in maths! Challenge 1 is to try the SATS maths arithmetic paper from this summer using a calculator - we've realised that you cannot solve all of them with only a calculator. Knowledge and understanding are required!

As we transition smoothly into our writing lesson, we'll be planning arguments for a discussion text entitled 'Should calculators be allowed in the KS2 maths SATS tests?'.

Snow White rehearsals set to begin in the afternoon.

The Week Ahead - Monday 12th June 2017, by Miss Adamson

Date: 10th Jun 2017 @ 4:38pm

Hello all :)

I hope that you have had a wonderful break and are looking forward to coming back to school!

This week is a little different than usual as we have our phonics screening check. I've written out an overview by day as I think it will be simpler for this week!

Monday

Today is 'Phonics Funday'. We will be doing phonics games and activities all day as a little refresher following the two week break.

Tuesday

Today most children will complete their phonics screening check with Miss Adamson. The check usually lasts between four and nine minutes per child. While children are not doing their phonics check they will do some more fun phonics activities in the classroom.

Wednesday

Any children who have not yet completed the check will do theirs this morning. Reading will go ahead as normal so please bring books in. In the afternoon the children will have music with Mrs Bolton.

Thursday

We are learning about telling the time to the hour and the half hour in maths. In English, we are reading a story called Tommy and the Frog and deciding whether the sentences should end in full stops, question marks or exclamation marks. In the afternoon we will be doing throwing and catching skills in PE.

Friday

We are continuing our work on telling the time in maths. We will have a look at quarter hours. In English we will write our own Tommy and the Frog sentences using question marks, exclamation marks and full stops. During the afternoon we have the Dance from the Heart Roadshow. This is where we will perform the dance that we have been practising and watch a shhort performance.

Further information about the coming half-term can be found in the topic letter which will be in book bags this week. I have also uploaded a copy to the Penguins class page.

I look forward to seeing you all on Monday!

Warm regards,

Miss Adamson

Arts Week -Peter Blake, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 26th May 2017 @ 9:01pm

What an amazing week. The children have yet again impressed me with their skills, concentration and determination.  Yesterday and today we have been thinking about the work of Peter Blake. His use of bold colours and simple shapes, how his art reflected the period of time in which it was created.

We have tried to recreate some of his famous pieces. The first being a modern day collage, 16 squares showing examples of Peter Blake's bold shapes With images from today which were relevant to the children.  There are images of sweets, drinks, games they like to play, portraits of themselves or family.  Each one is unique and personal to every member of the Giraffe Tribe.  They look amazing.

We have also created a 3D version of the bold designs using 'mod roc'.  Covering cardboard shapes and then painting with acrylic paint.  These have been glued together and are going to be mounted to create 1 large piece of art work.  It looks really striking.

The children have been amazing all week; working hard, giving each activity a go, showing perseverance with new techniques and being supportive of each other.  A fantastic end to the half term.

Fingers crossed the sunny weather continues for the half term break.  Have a good rest and enjoy the holidays.

Arts Week Day 4, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 25th May 2017 @ 6:02pm

This morning started with another run through of the movie themed dance from the heart. Back in class we learnt about the Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh. We looked at examples of his work and then designed buildings and stain glass windows in his style.

At 11 o'clock we went outside to our favourite spot on the bog garden. There we had a time of silent reflection to appreciate the people we love, the fun filled week we are having and the fact that people in our area are having an awful time. At the end of the reflection members of the school parliament released balloons as a symbol of appreciation and remembrance.

back in class we completed our designs and then learnt 2 Scottish folk songs.

After lunch we walked to StAndrews Church and sketched the building in the style of Mackintosh. Tomorrow the children will be using inks to create their final pieces.

Change over day - Year 3, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 24th May 2017 @ 10:49pm

Today was change over day. Children from years 1,2 and 3 worked together, moving around the different classrooms.

While in year 3, they learnt about the Eiffel Tower.  It is painted every 7 years and takes 1 and 1/2 years to paint.  It is painted in 3 shades of brown!

The challenge set in the year 3 classroom was to work collaboratively to build an Eiffel Tower using art straws.  We also tried to create one with spaghetti and marshmallows, it was very sticky! How high could we get them without falling over?

There was fantastic team work, sharing ideas and helping each other.  Each team needed someone to take on the very important role of 'find the end of the sellotape!'

Changeover Day in Year One, by Miss Adamson

During changeover day in the Year One classroom we studied three French paintings. Monet's picture of the Japanese garden, Signac's painting of Venice and Derain's painting of a little village on the outskirts of Marseille. We all drew a little part of the pictures and glued them together to make three giant pictures. The children worked so hard - a fantastic team effort!

It was a challenge to put it together because if it was too tall it would topple over! The winners got a chocolate bar to take home (They seceretly ate it at lunch break(Thomas told me!)).

Arts Week, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 23rd May 2017 @ 9:51pm

The children have had a great start to the week.  Over the last 2 days they have been learning about the work if the French artist, Seurat.  Mrs Ainsworth showed the children the technique of pointillism, they created some lovely paintings of butterflies and dragonflies.  Today the children developed these skills to create their own paintings.

With such lovely weather this afternoon the children went outside to use their sketchbooks and appreciate the nature around our school.

Tomorrow the children will be working in groups with year 1 and 2 children on a variety of activities.

Here are a few photos, lots more to follow tomorrow.
