Whilst we have been biking this week with our visitors, some of us have been learning about the life cycles of different animals. We went into the computer room and creatively thought of different ways we could present our information. These ranged from power points to scratch projects. They looked amazing.

Tigers and the European Referendum, by Mrs Moxham

Date: 23rd Jun 2016 @ 12:20am

This week, the Tigers have been looking at the European Union and some basic details about the referendum and the campaign for staying in and leaving. They completed a reading comprehension looking at both sides of the argument and thought about what it may mean for themselves and the country in the future. I was very impressed by how much information they already knew and their level of interest in it. They realised it was difficult to think about which side was most effective and how voting may be hard for some people.

In English, they looked at both sides and wrote a balanced report. I was again very impressed with their structure, features and reasoned viewpoints.

At the end of the day, we had a secret ballot on how they would vote if they could and 23 pupils voted for remain, 8 pupils voted to leave and we discussed 1 ballot paper as that Tiger had put a cross in both boxes and so we discussed it would not be accepted.

I hope that this helps the Tigets be able to engage in discussions at a home and can follow the coverage from Thursday on this important vote.

Year 6 will be conducting a debate in assembly on Thursday.

Awards.... Awards..... Everywhere!, by Mrs Moxham

Date: 22nd Jun 2016 @ 5:41pm

We had a very special assembly today as we welcomed Steven Jackson from Community Education Awards to our school to present Mr Pearson and the Enterprise year 6 group with the winning trophy for ' Money Management Award'. We were fortunate to be 'Highly Commended' for our sports leaders lunch time initiative, the digital leaders also and Mr Yates for 'Community Champion Award'.

Mr Turner also came ( along with the Lancashire Evening Post) to present us with the most money school raised for the Royal British Legion.

What an amazing achievement.

Unfortunately  Seema Kennedy was ill and sent her apologies. We hope to ask her into school later in month as the School Parliament have some questions for her to help them with the job description for school council next year.

Giraffes at the zoo, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 20th Jun 2016 @ 8:25pm

On arrival at Chester Zoo it was raining quite heavily but it didn't dampen the excitement. Our first stop was the elephant enclosure where we enjoyed looking at the animals, especially the 10 month old baby. Whilst looking at the animals we listened to the keeper who told us that elephants have 40000 muscles in their trunks!

We also enjoyed seeing our namesakes the beautifully graceful giraffes. Our journey around the zoo let us see many wonderful animals. It really has been a great day out 😀

Tigers meet the tigers, by Mrs Moxham

Date: 20th Jun 2016 @ 8:06pm

A great day was had by all at Chester Zoo today. Mason and Oliver B wrote a short account of their favourite part of the day.

Bat house by Mason and Oliver B

When we walked in it was very dark and bats were flying all around. There were some small ones and they used a laser to show us them hanging from the ceiling. In the cave, the smell of bat we was really bad and some children were scared of them flying around. One of them flew right into us and one even tried to fly out through the exit. Luckily there was a triple door so they couldn't get outside.

Unlike us, the Tigers at the zoo were very lazy and just led there- sitting on the rock. We, on the other hand, were racing around looking at all the great animals.

Of course we will still keep using our phonics to support our reading and writing but we can have a little break from alien words for now!

We learned how to keep pace in music and wrote some amazing explanation texts.

We are having a big focus on handwriting and key maths focus on times tables. Each week they will be bringing home times table homework on top of other areas.

Projects for this term are in for next Friday. Our topic areas are plants and the Romans. Any question , please feel free to come into school.

Sports Festival, by Mr Monckton

Date: 15th Jun 2016 @ 10:05am

It's been great at Penwortham Girls today. We attended the festival with New Longton and we were split into 3 mixed groups and we worked on lots of different skills. One of the skills we worked on was team work. We were split into 3 mixed groups where we did lots of getting to know you sessions first off all finding out some different facts about our new team. We then had to put ourselves in height order before we started our team game where we had to get across our river as a team. This was so exciting! We also took part in athletics in the dance studio and some skills on the netball court.
After lunch we took part in a massive netball tournament. We really had a great day.

What was even better was the amazing dance from the heart workshop when we got back to school.

St. John's Ambulance, by Mrs Thomson

Date: 27th May 2016 @ 6:55pm

Wednesday was another great day for everyone in year six! Rory, a trainer from St. John's Ambulance spent the whole day teaching us about how to deal with bleeding, what to do if someone drank a poisonous liquid, how to deal with choking  and what we should do if we find someone who is unconscious.

After practising the recovery position several times,  bandaging each other up and taking it in turns to remember DRS ABC, Rory decided to set us all a homework task. Please expect lots of first aid tuition at home!

Art week - The Spooky Storyteller!, by Mrs Thomson

Date: 27th May 2016 @ 6:11pm

On Thursday this week we started our day with a special visitor in our assembly, Dominic the storyteller. Dominic introduced himself and explained that he has over one hundred stories in his head and travels all around the world telling stories to children and adults. He told lots of stories in the hall and had everyone laughing at his story about a boy called Jack.

Dominic then came into our classroom. He told us more stories and we all asked for a 'spooky story'. He had one ready in his head and it certainly had an ending that shocked us all!

Dominic worked with everyone in year six and explained how to make stories up, how to read them to others and what tricks he uses to capture the audience. We enjoyed working in pairs to retell his story in eighty seconds.
