The week ahead, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 19th Nov 2017 @ 6:02pm

I hope you have had a lovely weekend, it's been a bit chilly but the sun has been shining at least.

We have another busy week planned.

GPS - determiners and pronouns.

English - our final week on Fables.  The children will be writing their own fables using the structure from the Lion and the Mouse and the characters they have created as part of their homework. A key focus is on the use of connectives in complex sentences.

Maths - We will continue our work on division and its links with multiplication. Remember to keep learning those times tables!

PSHE - this week is road safety week.  Mrs Neilson will be delivering this lesson and we will have an assembly to find out more about it.

P.E. - Swimming.  We will be starting our water safety lessons on Thursday.  Don't forget your shorts and T.shirt as well as your usual swimming stuff.

D.T. - Mrs Neilson will be focusing on healthy eating and the Eatwell plate this week.  Over the next few weeks she will be taking the children out in groups to develop their baking and cooking skills.

Play Practise. - children will not be allowed their lines this week.  They have had 3 weeks to learn them so we can now just work on expression, stage directions and making sure they can be heard.  Thank you for your support with this.

THURSDAY - 2pm Parents in class.  Our focus for this is going to be Fractions.  This is often a tricky area for children so this is a fantastic opportunity for you to find out how we teach it in school do you can continue to support their learning and reassure them they CAN do it. .  I look forward to seeing you there.

Week beginning the 20th Nov, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 19th Nov 2017 @ 3:09pm

If there are any particularly good bakers (or not so good... we're not picky laugh) amongst our parents, we would love to have you give us a hand this week with our enterprise! We will be making giant plain cookies and then melting chocolate and making them half-dipped - an extra pair of hands would be greatly appreciated!

Don't forget, this Wednesday afternoon all parents are welcome to join us for a lesson on fractions. If you won't be able to make it, but would like to know what a typical maths lesson looks like - just pop in and I'll give you a copy of the annotated lesson plan that I'll be handing out on Wednesday.

This week will look like this:

English: Alice in Wonderland - grammar and comprehension skills

GPS: Semi-colon pauses

Maths: Multiplication - Area - use this to explore area. For a bonus challenge try colouring in the squares different colours and find the area of the whole shape you create, but then also try working out what fraction of the shape you have coloured in (for example) pink!

Science: Reversible changes

D.T: Making products for Enterprise

Art: Looking at graffiti artist - SAGE for inspiration of Word Art

Computing: E-safety

PSHE: Jigsaw - different cultures

R.E: Christian stories

PE: Dance (Tuesday) and Beyond Sport (Monday)

If you have any artefacts/special skills/holiday pics etc. that would help us with our learning - please feel free to volunteer them! We would love to have some visitors to our class this year and learning always works best when it is contextualised!

Hello all :)

I hope you're having a happy weekend!

English

We are reading Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. We are going to walk to the library on Monday morning and learn about some stories from cold places.

Maths

We are learning about fractions. Specifically, a fraction is one equal part of a whole. We will also learn about halves and quarters of shapes and quantities.

Phonics

Mrs Thomson's group is learning ew (chew the stew), oe (ten toes) and au (he caught a fish). Miss Adamson's group is learning air (that's not fair), er (better letter), or (shut the door) and ure (sure it's pure).

Geography

We are learning about continents and finding cold places on a map of the world. We will be linking this to the Lost and Found story.

Jigsaw

We are learning what bully is and how being bullied might feel.

PE

We are still learning new ways of travelling and rolling. We are continuing to work on creating our own sequences.

I look forward to seeing you all on Monday,

Miss Adamson

Parliament Week, by Miss Adamson

Date: 17th Nov 2017 @ 11:12pm

This week is Parliament week. The children asked some questions about what they'd like to know about parliament. We focussed on finding out what it is like inside the Houses of Parliament. Most children would like to be in the House of Lords because of the red seats! We learned about the Queen's messenger, Black Rod, who knocks on the door of the House of Commons. The children compared the difference between the Queen and the Prime Minister and decided who they thought was the most important.

Date: 17th Nov 2017 @ 11:08pm

Year One have been using tens and ones to help us to understand two digit numbers.

Parliament week, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 17th Nov 2017 @ 5:10pm

This week it has been Parliament week and the Penguins have been finding out about the Houses of Parliament, who the Prime Minister is, the House of Common and the House of Lords and what colour the seats are. Today we had a debate discussing if we should let people bring in chocolate, crisps or sweets as a snack at playtime. We designed posters to persuade people and then discussed the ideas. The children then had to vote by marking a "ballot paper" and I have counted them and..........17 votes for keeping snacks healthy  (the chocolate, sweets and crisps 12) so the Penguins have definitely got the healthy message😀

School football team, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 17th Nov 2017 @ 12:41pm

The A team participated in a 7 aside football tournament at Priory. We all played really well, fantastic effort, we won 4 , drew 2 so the last game was crucial. It was against Whitefield and was very tight but sadly they scored in the last minute, which meant that they qualified for the next round. We were complimented on our team spirit and skill, well done team , we should fell very proud. Let's hope we get a bit of silverware in the league,

kind regards, Nicholas (team captain)

Homework, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 16th Nov 2017 @ 5:40pm

Maths homework this week is all about drawing the fractions - We've had a bit of trouble getting our head round fractions over the last few days, so it is a simple drawing exercise, but the important bit is the explaining the drawings. Children can write notes to explain what they have done, or can wait until we talk about them in class to verbally explain what they have done. There is also a spicy multiplication and division homework that children are free to grab off me if they'd like it! It's a photocopy, so I won't bother trying to take a picture and put a blurry one up here - just ask if you want one.

For English, I have sent home some spellings to learn. They are silent letter spellings and we did them last half-term, so I'm hoping they shouldn't be too hard to learn! I have noticed that I have (rather ironically) made a mistake on the hand out... it is meant to say "there'll be a test" not "they'll be a test". Apparently, Miss Reynolds can't talk and write simultaneously!

James Blog No.5, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 16th Nov 2017 @ 3:12pm

This week in year 5, we have been doing lot's of ART! We have been drawing the Houses Of Parliment. We sketched part or all of the Houses Of Parliment and everyone included the tiniest bits of detail for example: The spikes on top of most of the Houses Of Parliment, The Numbers / Roman Numerals on Big Ben (a.k.a. Elizabeth Tower). In Science, we have been learning about reversable & irreversible changes. We learnt that salt is a reversable from :

Salt Water →Salt Salt→Salt Water and lots of other reversible changes. Extra Info: Water To Steam = evaperation, steam to ice= sublimation and vice verca, steam to water= condensation, water to ice= freezing, ice to water= melting. while we were learning about reversible changes, we learnt about kg into stone and °F to °C. We have had a great time this week and can't wait for next week!yessmiley

Sing , by Mr Pearson

Date: 16th Nov 2017 @ 9:40am

Solo 1

Some words they can’t be spoken only sung,

So hear a thousand voices shouting love,

  1. 3 choir)

There’s a place, there’s a time, in this life,

When you sing what you are feeling,

Find your feet, stand your ground,

Don’t you see right now the world is listening

To what we say?

Sing it louder, sing it clearer

Knowing everyone will hear you

Make some noise

Find your voice tonight

Sing it stronger, sing together

Make this moment last forever

Old and young shouting love tonight.

Part 1 Part 2

To sing we’ve had a lifetime to wait, (wait, wait, wait)

And see a thousand faces celebrate

(We have to celebrate)

You brought hope, you brought light,

Conquered fear, no it wasn’t always easy,

Stood your ground, kept your faith,

Don’t you see right now the world is listening

To what we say….

Sing it louder, sing it clearer

Knowing everyone will hear you

Make some noise

Find your voice tonight

Sing it stronger, sing together

Make this moment last forever

Old and young shouting love tonight.

Solo 2

Some words they can’t be spoken only sung

To hear a thousand voices shouting love

(All) AND PEACE AND HOPE!

Just sing, just sing, just sing, just sing

Come on and

Sing it louder, sing it clearer

Knowing everyone will hear you

Make some noise

Find your voice tonight

Sing it stronger, sing together

Make this moment last forever

Old and young shouting love tonight.

(Solo 1) Hear a thousand voices shouting love.

Our learning so far this week, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 15th Nov 2017 @ 7:01pm

This week so far we have enjoyed another story with a twist, The true story of the three little pigs. We are writing our own versions changing some parts of the story , today we thought about our story maps.

In Maths we have been finding out all about pictograms and  collected some data on our favourite fruit - which was a resounding vote for strawberries. We had to think about what to do when the picture was worth more than 1 and how to make the different amounts.

Today we have looked at finding out the different stages we go through as we grow older , the children enjoyed looking at some photos of me with my family when  I was their age. The children are welcome to bring in some baby photos so we can see how they have changed! ( And can see how cute they were, sorry still are of course!!)

Remembrance , by Mrs Catterall

Date: 12th Nov 2017 @ 11:51pm

On a Friday at 11am we held our 2 minute silence in school to remember all those who have fought for our country and our safety.  We listened to Mr Turner who shared his memories of being a child during the war and his father going off to fight. The children were extremely respectful.  We reflected on the experience at the end of the day after we wrote acrostic poems and completed some mindful colourings.
