Year 6: The Giraffes: Blog items

James And Joe Blog No.3, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 18th Oct 2017 @ 3:14pm

This Week In Year 5, we have been doing Science Experiments! We did an observation of different objects such as : iron blocks, raw wool ,cow skin and wire wool. We Went round the class and observed the various items on the tabels. We recorded the items that interested us and wrote: how they felt, how they look, how they smell and questions about the object that interested us. We Really enjoyed our afternoon and we hope that Miss Reynolds sets us another fun lesson like this! (Note, Miss Reynolds Always Does Fun Lessons And Your Child Is Getting Good Education) <--- The Irony of this sentence is not lost on Miss Reynolds cheeky

Homework, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 12th Oct 2017 @ 7:26am

Hello! Homework is going out today - Mrs Woolley has got it. smiley Sorry I didn't get round to writing this last night because of parents evening!

The English homework is resisiting being uploaded I'm afraid - but it's just a sheet working on adverbs to recap what we've been doing in class.

Maths is working more on perimeter of rectilinear shapes and the spicy challenge is being given out with the normal homework this week (on the back). I'd really love it is everyone could have a go at some of it - even if it is just 1 question! We did the pentagon one in class, so you can just do that one if you like! Remember there are two rules for regular shapes - 1) All the sides are the same length and 2) All the angles are the same length. It's not regular if it doesn't follow BOTH rules!

Also, there will be a dojo point for everyone who gets their homework in before the weekend. smiley

Week beginning the 9th October, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 8th Oct 2017 @ 6:10pm

I am away on a course all day on Thurday and Friday - so I will be teaching all day Monday & Tuesday, instead of having Mrs Fletcher in those afternoons. Then someone else will be covering me on Thursday and Friday. smiley It also means that I'll be sending homework home on Wednesday instead of Thursday and, as always, I'll put up a Maths spicy challenge on the website. If you need it printing out for you, just ask Mrs Woolley reaaaaaallly nicely and I'm sure she'd be happy to do it for you.

I'm really looking forward to seeing all of you at 'Parents Evening' this Monday and Wednesday and discussing how your children are settling into year 5 - See you then!

Miss R

This week will look like this:

English: Writing persuasive letters

GPS: Revisiting adverbials

Maths: Geometry - Perimeter of rectilinear shapes (for a bit of spicy maths fun - try this little game at home! Don't worry about the area stuff yet, but the perimeter will definitely come in handy!)

Geography: Map reading/Orienteering

Computing: Research using search engines and considering relevance of websites

PSHE: Jigsaw - British Values

French: Making visual vocabulary lists

PE: No gymnastics this week because the hall will be filled with our projects for parents evening. So, on Monday, we will be going outside and playing some sporty halloween themed games! devil Friday cricket will still be on.

If you have any artefacts/special skills/holiday pics etc. that would help us with our learning - please feel free to volunteer them! We would love to have some visitors to our class this year and learning always works best when it is contextualised!

Homework, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 5th Oct 2017 @ 8:09am

This week in English homework, we've got a practice sheet on modal verbs that we have working on in class. In Maths, the homework is a photocopy, so I have uploaded it here, just in case you are not sure whether you have it or not... but it is pretty terrible quality, so if you lose it just let me know and I'll photocopy you a new one. smiley The spicy challenge is also here - remember if you do the spicy challenge and find it is too hard, you don't have to finish it and you certainly shouldn't be stressing about it!

Date: 27th Sep 2017 @ 5:30pm

Maths homework this week is much easier - don't fret! I know a lot of people struggled with it last week, we will be working our way through them over the term and refining our skills with word problems in particular. Please do not stress about homework that you find tricky - if it is way too hard, leave it and let me know on the Monday and I'll find you something that will challenge you. I'll never be mad at you for not understanding something! Promise! Just try your best and if it is too easy - have a go at the spicy challenge! smiley

This week the spicy challenge document has a few sheets to choose from - they are all pretty much the same level, so just pick one. (PLEASE DON'T DO ALL OF THEM - GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY!!!)

Also, for those that are keen to knock Jack J off the high score position  - here's the link to the maths decimal game!

Friday maths, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 23rd Sep 2017 @ 11:39pm

On Friday, we did some hands-on decimal work. First of all, we found out how tall Roald Dahl was (as it was recently Roald Dahl day) and laid out some rulers to see how big 6 foot 6 is. Then we compared our own heights to Roald Dahls and realised just how big he was! Then we looked up how big the BFG was supposed to be - 24 foot! We worked out the difference between Roald Dahl and the BFG in feet and inches, then converted that to centimetres and finally, converted that into metres.... we found it really tricky!

Then, to give us a brain break, we played a decimal number bond to 1 game and Jack J set a high score for us to try and beat next week! In the afternoon, we measured how far we could jump in centimetres and then converted it to metres.... none of us came close to Mike Powell's record of 8.95m, but Luke W jumped the farthest in our class-competition with an impressive double-footed leap of 2.19m! 😊

Date: 23rd Sep 2017 @ 10:46pm

We have been practising our ability to retell a story by making our own news reports. The children worked independently to come up with their own script. They also made decisions around characterisation and wardrobe choices, and they even edited their own videos completely independently using iMovie. We hope you enjoy them as much as we have enjoyed making them!

(Sorry for having them in separate uploads... I can't quite figure out how to get them all on one device! Haha!)

In our first few weeks, we have coverd a lot of stuff such as The Anglo-Saxons in History/Topic. In English we have been learning about ;;;SEMI COLONS;;;  Miss Reynolds told us that not many people know how to use them (Example I would like: some juicy, lovely apples; some yellow, spiky pinapples;and some soft, small nectarines.) In Maths we are learning about decimals and rounding up and down. Yesterdays LO: was LO:To solve problems including 3 decimal places (Date Wednesday 21 September 2017.)

Homework, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 20th Sep 2017 @ 8:17am

Apparently I have been giving homework out a day early! So I won't be giving out a paper copy of the homework until tomorrow... But worry not my keen little tigers! If you feel like today is the day that you carpe diem and want to tackle that homework, feel free to download it from the links at the bottom!

Also, if you are thinking about what to do for your project homework, our topic is A Kingdom United - we are covering: everything about the Anglo-Saxons; British legends and folklore; British geography, including counties, climate, river and mountains. Make anything around one of these topics! Some ideas we have had in class have been: designing, creating and presenting Anglo-Saxon shields; a research powerpoint to present to the class on a river, mountain or any area of the UK - perhaps with some holiday pics if you've been there before; and a homemade comic of a British legend of folklore tale. Be as creative as you like!
