Arts Week -Monday , by Mrs Catterall
Date: 22nd May 2018 @ 9:40pm
On Monday we wore badges of the 53 commonwealth nations. We stood in a circle and passed the string from country to country in the order in which they joined the Commonwealth to create this web. We found out that some countries such as South Africa joined, then left, then joined again!
What links all the countries is the common language of English along with sharing common values and principles as set out in the Commonwealth Charter. We also used atlases to locate the different countries and had a guess the country flag competition.
In the afternoon we drew action poses to show the different sports in the Commonwealth Games. Then 2 Science teachers and some 6th form students came to class. We tested different foods for starch and fat. Athletes need the energy from these foods when carrying out their sport.

On Monday, we have a visit from a Deputy Lieutent for Lancashire who will teach the children a little about The Commonwealth. We also have a local artist, Peter Bourne, coming to school to make decorate fish with the children. On Tuesday, a local fibre artist will be sharing an assembly with the children about spinning wool and creating textiles. Some wind instrument players from Penwortham Girls High School will be coming to perform some of the songs they've been practising to Reception, Year One and Year Two. On Wednesday afternoon it is Sports Day (weather permitting). On Thursday, a dance group are coming to teach us some traditional Scottish dance. On Friday, a local artist who specialises in clay sculpture is coming to teach Year One some clay skills. Also, Peter Bourne is returning on Friday to help us to paint some poppies. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday we will practise for Dance from the Heart which is an annual dance event that takes place after half-term. We will also be doing our own art activities in class throughout the week based on countries from The Commonwealth.
We will change books on Friday as normal and check spellings. We will send home holidays passports instead of usual homework to complete over the half-term.
Please send in some kind of named old top/overall on Monday to keep in school all week. This is to protect the children's school uniform.
I look forward to seeing you on Monday,
