PSHE and RSHE
Welcome to our website dedicated to the vital role of Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education and Relationships and Sex Education (RSHE) in primary schools, particularly through the Kapow curriculum. Kapow PSHE/RSHE is designed to equip children with essential life skills, enhance their emotional wellbeing, and foster respectful relationships. By integrating Kapow PSHE/RSHE into the curriculum, we aim to create a safe and supportive learning environment where young learners can develop crucial social skills, understand their emotions, and navigate relationships, ultimately empowering them to become confident, responsible citizens in an increasingly complex world.

Curriculum Intent
At our school, PSHE and RSHE are central to supporting pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and understanding of the world around them. Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and knowledge-rich, enabling pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals and as members of society.
Our intent is that pupils:
Develop a strong understanding of mental health, wellbeing and emotional literacy
Learn how to build safe, respectful and healthy relationships
Understand how to keep themselves safe, both offline and online
Develop knowledge of physical health, healthy lifestyles and growing up
Understand their role as responsible citizens within their community and the wider world
Develop confidence, resilience and the ability to make informed choices
Use appropriate vocabulary to talk about feelings, relationships and personal safety
We use the Kapow Primary PSHE and RSHE scheme to ensure clear progression of knowledge and skills from EYFS to Year 6, fully aligned with statutory RSHE requirements. This is enhanced through the LPS+ curriculum, which deepens pupils’ understanding of personal safety, wellbeing and safeguarding themes.
Curriculum Implementation
PSHE and RSHE are taught weekly by the class teacher using Kapow units, supplemented by LPS+ character curriculum materials where appropriate.
Lessons are carefully structured to:
Revisit prior learning and build on pupils’ understanding over time
Explicitly teach new knowledge using age-appropriate language
Provide opportunities for discussion, reflection and scenario-based learning
Develop pupils’ confidence in speaking and listening respectfully
Teach strategies for managing emotions and resolving conflict
Embed learning about online safety, healthy relationships and personal safety throughout the curriculum
Kapow ensures a progressive approach to themes such as families and relationships, health and wellbeing, safety and the changing body, citizenship and economic wellbeing.
The LPS+ Character curriculum enhances this learning by:
Providing additional resources linked to safeguarding and personal safety
Reinforcing key messages around staying safe and making positive choices
Supporting pupils’ understanding of risk, consent and trusted adults
Teaching and developing character and life skills.
Inclusion and SEND
PSHE and RSHE are fully inclusive and accessible to all pupils through:
Structured talk and discussion opportunities
Visual prompts, stories and scenario-based learning
Clear, consistent vocabulary and modelling
A safe and supportive classroom environment where all views are respected
Adapted resources and adult support where needed
This ensures that all pupils, including those with SEND, can access and engage with sensitive and important learning.
Assessment and Monitoring
Assessment in PSHE and RSHE is formative and based on discussion, understanding and participation, rather than written outcomes.
Teachers assess pupils through:
Observation of discussions and contributions
Pupils’ ability to explain key concepts and vocabulary
Responses to scenarios and problem-solving activities
Reflection tasks and class discussions
Kapow assessment guidance supports teacher judgement. Outcomes are recorded on Bromcom, providing leaders and parents with a clear overview of pupil progress in
PSHE and RSHE.
How we know the curriculum is taught as intended
Leaders monitor implementation through:
Review of Kapow unit coverage across year groups
Lesson visits and pupil voice discussions
Monitoring of assessment information recorded on Bromcom
Discussions with staff to ensure consistent delivery of sensitive content
Evidence of LPS+ themes being reinforced across the school
This ensures the taught curriculum matches the planned curriculum.
Curriculum Impact
As a result of our PSHE and RSHE provision, pupils:
Develop the knowledge and confidence to keep themselves safe
Understand how to form healthy, respectful relationships
Can talk openly and appropriately about feelings, wellbeing and personal safety
Show empathy, respect and tolerance towards others
Demonstrate resilience and positive decision-making skills
Understand their responsibilities as members of a community and society
Assessment ensures that pupils know more, remember more and can do more in relation to their personal development and wellbeing over time.
Pupils leave our school with the knowledge, confidence and skills needed to navigate life safely, respectfully and responsibly.
