Parliament week, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 17th Nov 2017 @ 5:10pm

This week it has been Parliament week and the Penguins have been finding out about the Houses of Parliament, who the Prime Minister is, the House of Common and the House of Lords and what colour the seats are. Today we had a debate discussing if we should let people bring in chocolate, crisps or sweets as a snack at playtime. We designed posters to persuade people and then discussed the ideas. The children then had to vote by marking a "ballot paper" and I have counted them and..........17 votes for keeping snacks healthy  (the chocolate, sweets and crisps 12) so the Penguins have definitely got the healthy message😀

School football team, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 17th Nov 2017 @ 12:41pm

The A team participated in a 7 aside football tournament at Priory. We all played really well, fantastic effort, we won 4 , drew 2 so the last game was crucial. It was against Whitefield and was very tight but sadly they scored in the last minute, which meant that they qualified for the next round. We were complimented on our team spirit and skill, well done team , we should fell very proud. Let's hope we get a bit of silverware in the league,

kind regards, Nicholas (team captain)

Homework, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 16th Nov 2017 @ 5:40pm

Maths homework this week is all about drawing the fractions - We've had a bit of trouble getting our head round fractions over the last few days, so it is a simple drawing exercise, but the important bit is the explaining the drawings. Children can write notes to explain what they have done, or can wait until we talk about them in class to verbally explain what they have done. There is also a spicy multiplication and division homework that children are free to grab off me if they'd like it! It's a photocopy, so I won't bother trying to take a picture and put a blurry one up here - just ask if you want one.

For English, I have sent home some spellings to learn. They are silent letter spellings and we did them last half-term, so I'm hoping they shouldn't be too hard to learn! I have noticed that I have (rather ironically) made a mistake on the hand out... it is meant to say "there'll be a test" not "they'll be a test". Apparently, Miss Reynolds can't talk and write simultaneously!

James Blog No.5, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 16th Nov 2017 @ 3:12pm

This week in year 5, we have been doing lot's of ART! We have been drawing the Houses Of Parliment. We sketched part or all of the Houses Of Parliment and everyone included the tiniest bits of detail for example: The spikes on top of most of the Houses Of Parliment, The Numbers / Roman Numerals on Big Ben (a.k.a. Elizabeth Tower). In Science, we have been learning about reversable & irreversible changes. We learnt that salt is a reversable from :

Salt Water →Salt Salt→Salt Water and lots of other reversible changes. Extra Info: Water To Steam = evaperation, steam to ice= sublimation and vice verca, steam to water= condensation, water to ice= freezing, ice to water= melting. while we were learning about reversible changes, we learnt about kg into stone and °F to °C. We have had a great time this week and can't wait for next week!yessmiley

Sing , by Mr Pearson

Date: 16th Nov 2017 @ 9:40am

Solo 1

Some words they can’t be spoken only sung,

So hear a thousand voices shouting love,

  1. 3 choir)

There’s a place, there’s a time, in this life,

When you sing what you are feeling,

Find your feet, stand your ground,

Don’t you see right now the world is listening

To what we say?

Sing it louder, sing it clearer

Knowing everyone will hear you

Make some noise

Find your voice tonight

Sing it stronger, sing together

Make this moment last forever

Old and young shouting love tonight.

Part 1 Part 2

To sing we’ve had a lifetime to wait, (wait, wait, wait)

And see a thousand faces celebrate

(We have to celebrate)

You brought hope, you brought light,

Conquered fear, no it wasn’t always easy,

Stood your ground, kept your faith,

Don’t you see right now the world is listening

To what we say….

Sing it louder, sing it clearer

Knowing everyone will hear you

Make some noise

Find your voice tonight

Sing it stronger, sing together

Make this moment last forever

Old and young shouting love tonight.

Solo 2

Some words they can’t be spoken only sung

To hear a thousand voices shouting love

(All) AND PEACE AND HOPE!

Just sing, just sing, just sing, just sing

Come on and

Sing it louder, sing it clearer

Knowing everyone will hear you

Make some noise

Find your voice tonight

Sing it stronger, sing together

Make this moment last forever

Old and young shouting love tonight.

(Solo 1) Hear a thousand voices shouting love.

Our learning so far this week, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 15th Nov 2017 @ 7:01pm

This week so far we have enjoyed another story with a twist, The true story of the three little pigs. We are writing our own versions changing some parts of the story , today we thought about our story maps.

In Maths we have been finding out all about pictograms and  collected some data on our favourite fruit - which was a resounding vote for strawberries. We had to think about what to do when the picture was worth more than 1 and how to make the different amounts.

Today we have looked at finding out the different stages we go through as we grow older , the children enjoyed looking at some photos of me with my family when  I was their age. The children are welcome to bring in some baby photos so we can see how they have changed! ( And can see how cute they were, sorry still are of course!!)

Remembrance , by Mrs Catterall

Date: 12th Nov 2017 @ 11:51pm

On a Friday at 11am we held our 2 minute silence in school to remember all those who have fought for our country and our safety.  We listened to Mr Turner who shared his memories of being a child during the war and his father going off to fight. The children were extremely respectful.  We reflected on the experience at the end of the day after we wrote acrostic poems and completed some mindful colourings.

Fables - using conjunctions., by Mrs Catterall

Date: 12th Nov 2017 @ 11:45pm

On Thursday we had an 8 sentence fable.  It didn't read very well so we improved it by combining the shorter sentences together using connectives and adding in adverbs.

This week is Parliament week at school, so in amongst all of our usual learning, there will also be lots of learning about Parliament - if you have stories/pictures/expertise in this area, we woud love to hear from you this week! Just pop in on Monday morning and we can arrange a time for you to come in during the week and share your knowledge with us!

I know a few parents have been asking after the data from check up week, it will be sent out this week!

Also, on Friday, we will be going down to the Brickcroft to get some inspiration for our writing and our Art by getting out and about in a bit of nature... It's a busy week!

This week will look like this:

English: Alice in Wonderland - writing our own chapter

GPS: 'Show me, don't tell me' sentences

Art: Creating 'Winter Warmer' posters (didn't get chance last week!)

Computing: E-safety

Remembrance Day, by Miss Adamson

Date: 10th Nov 2017 @ 10:25pm

Thank you for all your effort into your costumes and donations. We enjoyed listening to Mr Turner's stories about his father. We wrote about what peace feels like, sounds like, smells like and tastes like. We watched the CBeebies video about remembrance to give us ideas. Five children who worked especially hard on their writing today had their faces or hands painted the Head's Team.

Remembrance Day, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 10th Nov 2017 @ 5:39pm

The Penguins all looked fantastic today as we thought about past wars and wars still today an d all those people who served so we can live or lives today. We wrote an acrostic poem spelling "poppy", wrote about what we had dressed up  as and also designed a medal. We had a school assembly and observed the 2  minute silence, Poppy told us about her Great Grandad and his efforts in the war.

Homework, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 10th Nov 2017 @ 3:35pm

This weeks homework for Maths is a photocopy sheet - A is mild, B is medium and C is spicy. I'd like you to do at least one question from each section and one whole section. For example, all of B and one question from A and one from C.

For English homework, I would like you to all log on to Spellodrome and practice the spelling words (I'm going to test you on Tuesday, but don't worry I don't expect you to learn all of them! We will do the same test in a couple weeks and see how we've improved, hopefully). Also, I would like you to choose any 5 words from the list and write them in a sentence in your homework book. 😊 Have a lovely weekend!

The Giraffes on Remembrance Day

Busy, busy, busy.., by Mrs Pratten

Date: 9th Nov 2017 @ 8:04pm

The Penguins have enjoyed practising their moves for our Christmas production, they were very enthusiastic! They have also been finding out about arrays and how they can help with multiplication.

In our Jigsaw work we were thinking about celebrating differences and how we can't assume for example, all girls like pink and all boys like football. We played a fun game where we had to choose either agree, disagree or not sure to various questions.

Today we have been learning about how baby animals grow and change, how some babies are not like the adults and that a baby snake is hatchling, a baby elephant is a calf and a baby goat is a kid!

Science -Skeletons, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 7th Nov 2017 @ 7:52pm

A fantastic afternoon.

We have had a great time this afternoon trying to answer the question, What does our skeleton look like?

After drawing our initial ideas we went into the hall to work as a team to create a skeleton using the bones given to us.  There were some interesting skeletons.

Using a correct skeleton, we took turns to observe and change our skeleton.

Mrs Catterall then taught us the names of lots of our bones.
