Week beginning the 9th October, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 8th Oct 2017 @ 6:10pm

I am away on a course all day on Thurday and Friday - so I will be teaching all day Monday & Tuesday, instead of having Mrs Fletcher in those afternoons. Then someone else will be covering me on Thursday and Friday. smiley It also means that I'll be sending homework home on Wednesday instead of Thursday and, as always, I'll put up a Maths spicy challenge on the website. If you need it printing out for you, just ask Mrs Woolley reaaaaaallly nicely and I'm sure she'd be happy to do it for you.

I'm really looking forward to seeing all of you at 'Parents Evening' this Monday and Wednesday and discussing how your children are settling into year 5 - See you then!

Miss R

This week will look like this:

English: Writing persuasive letters

GPS: Revisiting adverbials

Maths: Geometry - Perimeter of rectilinear shapes (for a bit of spicy maths fun - try this little game at home! Don't worry about the area stuff yet, but the perimeter will definitely come in handy!)

Geography: Map reading/Orienteering

Computing: Research using search engines and considering relevance of websites

PSHE: Jigsaw - British Values

French: Making visual vocabulary lists

PE: No gymnastics this week because the hall will be filled with our projects for parents evening. So, on Monday, we will be going outside and playing some sporty halloween themed games! devil Friday cricket will still be on.

If you have any artefacts/special skills/holiday pics etc. that would help us with our learning - please feel free to volunteer them! We would love to have some visitors to our class this year and learning always works best when it is contextualised!

Week Beginning Monday 9th October 2017, by Miss Adamson

Date: 8th Oct 2017 @ 11:38am

Hello all :)

I hope that you are enjoying your weekend.

This is what we are doing this week:

English

We are writing and performing poetry.

Maths

We are working on addition and subtraction. We are solving missing number sentences, solving number stories and making addition sentences that balance using Numicon.

Phonics

Miss Adamson's phonics group has completed phase 3 and 4 review. We are focusing on ay (e.g. may I play), ou (e.g. shout it out), ea (e.g. a cup of tea) and oy (e.g. toy for a boy). Mrs Thomson's group are focusing on oa (e.g. goat in a boat), oo (e.g. poo at the zoo), and ar (e.g. start the car).

Handwriting

We are practising cursive letter formation in our special handwriting books and ensuring we are writing using the tripod grip.

Jigsaw

We are making freeze frames in groups that show us making good choices.

Design and Technology

We are designing, making and evaluating superhero hand puppets.

PE

We are learning about balancing and running.

A note about spellings

With your children's spellings, do not worry about getting a new set every week. We are also reviewing their old spellings on a Friday as we find that otherwise we remember the most recent and forget the old. Some of the lists are very tricky so it will take longer than one week of practise to ensure that children are confident in spelling them. Thank you for all your effort. We have been pleasantly surprised by how well the children are doing in the weekly check!

I look forward to seeing you all in the week.

Many thanks,

Miss Adamson

Jigsaw Jenie, by Mrs Hothersall

Date: 6th Oct 2017 @ 10:00pm

As part of our PSHE curriculum we have a friend called Jigsaw Jenie he stays in our class and helps us to follow the class rules. This week we have been thinking about gentle hands. We read a story called hands are not for hitting. We then thought about how hands can be kind and gentle. We waved hello and goodbye, we shook hands, we held hands to keep safe when crossing the road and we thought of much more....we decided that we would not hit or push as a class and if someone did something we didn't like in school we would say "please don't do that we don't like it."

Water fun, by Mrs Hothersall

Date: 6th Oct 2017 @ 9:48pm

We have had fun inside and outside with water. We have had a dinosaur wash... And yellow water inside just for a change. We have washed and scrubbed and filled and emptied!

The Bongos had a lovely afternoon on Wednesday with Mrs Thompson and Mrs Gray.  They took part in a story massage session.  This builds on the peer massage work that is carried out in school.  The children learn a range of movements which are used to help tell a story.  As I walked through the hall there was calm and a lovely atmosphere between the children.

Homework, by Miss Reynolds

Date: 5th Oct 2017 @ 8:09am

This week in English homework, we've got a practice sheet on modal verbs that we have working on in class. In Maths, the homework is a photocopy, so I have uploaded it here, just in case you are not sure whether you have it or not... but it is pretty terrible quality, so if you lose it just let me know and I'll photocopy you a new one. smiley The spicy challenge is also here - remember if you do the spicy challenge and find it is too hard, you don't have to finish it and you certainly shouldn't be stressing about it!
