Remembrance Day, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 11th Nov 2016 @ 1:32pm

The day started learning about the history of Remembrance Day. The children then made some amazing posters using Remembrance themed vocabulary to show their understanding of the day . After play we went into the hall where Mr Turner from the Royal British Legion spoke to the school about life as a young boy in Bamber Bridge during the Second World War. He also spoke about the history of the poppy.

back in class the children used their senses to describe peace. This afternoon they are busy designing medals and choosing who and why to give them to.

Magical spelling, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 8th Nov 2016 @ 11:15pm

We have spent a lot of time looking at spellings and listening to sounds so today we decided to feel spellings. This probably sounds very strange but we really did feel words today.

We did this by imagining that we were Harry Potter or Hermione Granger and that our rulers were magic wands that could write words in the air in beautiful joined up cursive writing. Great fun was had by all writing words from our spelling lists in the air.

Year 6 Class Assembly, by Mr Coxhead

Date: 28th Oct 2016 @ 10:02am

Year 6 finished the first half-term on a high this morning with a fantastic class assembly performance! They feel extremely proud of themselves after the performance and so they should!

A few snapshots can be seen below.

We've also added the video clip from the opening segment of the assembly. The curtains opened to reveal an empty stage with a live broadcast projected on to the screen from our pretend class 'CCTV cameras' - see video. When the class arrived on the stage, they realised they had forgotten the script. Connor volunteered to go back and collect it (which is why he appears again at the end of the video clip).

We wish everyone a happy and safe half-term! See you all in early November to continue the great start to our year.

Rota Kids , by Miss Leigh

A few weeks ago we had a visit from Tom to talk to us about Rota Kids and the charitable work which we can undertake.  As a class we decided to become part of Rota Kids and today we held our elections. Many of the class put themselves forwards for election, making a short presentation about the qualities they could bring to the position.  After listening carefully to the campaigns we held our very own election will ballot papers.  It was a very close race!

Biographies, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 26th Oct 2016 @ 11:49pm

For the last 2 weeks we have been focusing on Biographies in our English lessons.  I have been impressed by the children's dedication to researching facts about the author 'Dick King Smith'.  They have worked together in pairs cooperatively and have organised their facts under subheadings.  This week we have been focusing on writing in paragraphs.  I can't wait to read their finished biographies which they are going to publish using the computer skills we have been learning this half term.

Persuasive letter writing - Wind Farm, by Miss Leigh

Date: 25th Oct 2016 @ 11:57am

Year 5 have blown me away with some amazing writing over the past week.

We have been learning about persuasive writing for the past 3 weeks. Our writing was based on a purely fictitious letter we received about a plan to build 2 wind farms next to school.   The child were determined this would NOT go ahead. We have research the positive and negative environmental factors of wind farms and discussed the impact of this kind of development on our community.  Finally, we have been writing letters to the council protesting and putting together everything we have learnt.

I have been impressed with their use of persuasive features, use of emotive language and modal verbs.  It has been fantastic to see such passion and enthusiasm for writing. The quality of the work they have produced has been tremendous.  I think you will agree that the children have really risen to the challenge of a "real life" learning opportunity, although I hope we didn't panic you with the news of the wind farm.

Well Done Bears.  You've ended this unit of work amazingly.

Shadows, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 24th Oct 2016 @ 7:53pm

The sun was shining this afternoon and we took the opportunity to look at our shadows and compare them to the predictions we made on Friday last week.  The children discovered the position of their afternoon shadow was correct, however soon realised their shadow was an outline and didn't have hair, eyes and socks like their predicted shadows did! With the knowledge of how to make shadows larger and smaller using puppets on Friday they have shown a good understanding of shadows and had fun outdoors researching it.  Let's hope we have some sun in the morning to test out our am shadow position predictions.

Lost and found, by Mrs Hothersall

Date: 21st Oct 2016 @ 2:31pm

After listening to the story of the lost sheep last week, we found a story called list and found. It was all about a little penguin who turned up at a little boys house....he thought the penguin was lost. We thought about if we had ever been lost and how it might feel.

As our Friday minion treat we watched the small film about lost and found and we all had iced lollies.
