Y4 Friday 18 October, by Mr Pearson
Date: 18th Oct 2019 @ 1:21pm
At the start of the week in Grammar we started off doing suffixes adding ing, er, est and then transferring our understanding in our writing. We have also used expanded noun phrases to use in our English. In English we did imperative verbs to put into sentences with our English topic the shirt machine
The guided reading we have been completing comprehension and looking at being detectives looking for clues in the text.
In writing we have been studying about explanation text’s and have written two of our own.
In maths our main thing was learning time. We got the clocks out and Mr Pearson said a time and we had work it out plus we had a work sheet to work out the time and the time could have been a 24hour clock. Please can you all practice at home.
In science we learnt how the ear works and drew a diagram looking at the outer ear with the ear canal, the middle ear with the three bones and the inner ear looking at the cochlea.
In French we put all the things we have done into a wanted poster of anyone in the class. In art we finished off any work not completed.

Great Half Term, by Mrs Fletcher
Date: 18th Oct 2019 @ 1:16pm
As we finish for half term Mrs Woolley and I would like to say well done to the Elephants for being so amazing. They have worked hard and made a great start to Year 2.
Thank you for all of the woenderful projects, we have enjoyed looking at them and appreciate all of the hard work that has gone into them. Some of them are part of a joint Year 1 and 2 display in the corridor.
We have had a great last day as we made it outside for cricket and have enjoyed a movie as our compliment treat this afternoon.
We hope you all have a lovely half term.

Meerkats you truly are amazing. Well done to everyone who has brought in a project. You’re all very creative. We have some along our food theme, some linked to the moon as part of our whole school theme of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and some which have combined both ideas together. Well done to everyone.
Year 4 Blog, by Mr Pearson
Date: 14th Oct 2019 @ 4:55am
What A busy week we had, look at all this learning!
At the start of the week Mr Kennedy came in to do some modal verbs with sentences e.g. I might skip, I can skip, I can’t skip. On Tuesday we had a look at noun phrases putting them into sentences. Moving on to Wednesday, we did suffixes. This was in addition to looking at explanation texts using a short film called the shirt maker as inspiration.
In maths we have been learning about angles and know right angles obtuse and acute and then on Thursday we learnt how to multiply and divide decimals by 10,100 and 1000. We keep on practising the times tables.
In art this week, we did oil pastes to shade different fruits and veg to smudge colours
In P.E. active maths, we did sums with cones to see if we can find different calculations.
In Mr Pearson’s PE we are continuing to learn about attack and defence skills, this time using bench ball. We also had another circuit training lesson.
In music we studied some tunes and also learning the note A.
In French this week, we used colures to describe people’s hair colour and eye colour.
In science, we made a sound sandwich out of 2 lolly pop sticks 2 cut up straws 1 thick elastic bands and 2 small elastic bands witch then make a sound sandwich. We then investigated pitch.

Firework safety poster competition, by Mrs Catterall
Date: 11th Oct 2019 @ 3:04pm
Sorry this is late notice, time has flown quickly and posters need to be in well before bonfire night to be judged and prizes awarded before the day.
Children from any class can enter. Just create a poster showing how to be safe on bonfire night and bring it to school on Monday to be sent off to Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
Last year we had an overall winner in school, it would be great if someone from Longton could win a prize.
Getting messy using our hands, by Mrs Pratten
Date: 11th Oct 2019 @ 3:00pm
Today we had great fun using our sense of touch. We touched shaving foam, jelly, gloop and explored different objects. It was very messy but lots of fun, we came up with some great words to describe what we were feeling. Think we are all clean now!!!!!
Spellings, by Miss Reynolds
Date: 11th Oct 2019 @ 7:20am
This week we've been looking at -ible/-able endings on words. It can be almost impossible to hear the difference when you say the word because -able sounds a lot like -ible in words like adorable.
Generally, the rule it that if you can take off the -ible/able and it is a word (if the root word usually ends with an e, this has usually been dropped) then it has an -able ending - adorable, respectable, loveable, doable.
If you drop the ible/able and it is not a word on its own, it usually means that it has an -ible ending: horrible, terribile, incredible. Don't forget that y's often change to i's when an ending is added, but it still acts as if the root word was there: enviable - envy+able, reliable = rely+able. Common exception to the rules (because there is always one!) :sensible.
Your homework this week is to learn these -ible/-able spellings, but make sure you have got your head around the rules because I'm going to throw in a few extras in our spelling test on Thursday to see if you've cracked the spelling rule.

Yesterday we carried on with our senses learning, using our sense if smell to work out what was in the pots, some nice smells some not so nice! Today we were tasting using our tongue and mouth. We all helped to peel and chop vegetables to make a vegetable curry. Next we had fun tasting different flavour crisps to see what our class favourite was. We discovered it was salt and vinegar. Tomorrow we are using our hands to touch and feel...

Cricket with Mark, by Miss Leigh
Date: 10th Oct 2019 @ 2:07pm
This week we have done cricket with Mark. We did a race to see who could get the most points at five stations with different things to do. We’ve been working on these skills: batting, bowling, fielding, short throwing and long bounce pass to each other across the hall. Outside we have been putting our skills together and putting them into miniature cricket games. Except we start off with five bats and every time we get caught out or get stumped we lose a cricket bat until we haven’t got any left.
Im glad it didn’t rain.

A few reminders, by Mrs Catterall
Date: 8th Oct 2019 @ 8:33pm
Just a few reminders.
Next week we will be sending home holiday passports, there are still several children who have not returned them after the summer holidays. Please can you send them in so they can be marked ready for next week.
Projects to be in this week please. Thankyou to those people who have brought them in, I’m looking forward to you telling us all about them.
Next Friday, 18th October we are holding our enterprise after school. The children are going to be decorating shortbread biscuits to make them into Pudsey bear faces. If anyone could spare an hour or so during the day to help out I would be very grateful, please call in to speak to me or leave a message with Linda and I’ll get back to you. I know Children in Need isn’t for another month but we thought this was a perfect opportunity to raise money for a worthwhile cause and to link in with our food and baking topic.
Amazing artists, by Mrs Catterall
Date: 8th Oct 2019 @ 8:21pm
Over the last 2 days we have been focusing on drawing fruit. Yesterday we just used the photographs of fruit and veg faces by Giuseppe Archimboldo. Today we completed some observational drawings of fruit focusing on the inside of them and the seeds they contain.
The detail was amazing, I can’t wait to see their skills in shading develop as we go through the year.
Well done Meerkats.
Maths - smartie graphs, by Mrs Catterall
Date: 8th Oct 2019 @ 8:17pm
Today we investigated my theory.
I think there are fewer orange smarties in a box than any other colour.
We each had a box of smarties, counted up the different colours and recorded our data in a table. From this we drew a bar chart. There was not a conclusive answer, some children had fewer orange smarties than any other colour some didn’t. Tonight I have collated all the results. I’ll let you know the answer tomorrow.
