The week ahead - 18th June, by Mrs Catterall

We have another busy week ahead. Here is an overview of our lessons this week.
English - we will be developing our narrative writing. We will start off by looking at the story and film clip of Paddington having a bath and write this as our own story. We will then think about othe everyday tasks that Paddington might do and consider how this might work out for Paddington. I can already hear the entertaining ideas and giggles!
Maths - this week we will be focuing on multiplication and division. I will be making sure all children know how to access the new times table rockstars challenges from home and if they haven't already they will be bringing home their usernames and passwords on Monday.
GPS - we will be spelling 'ou' words. We will be focusing on adding commas into the correct palces in compex sentences where a subordiante clause comes first. We will be then be checking our own work for this type of sentence.
PE - Tennis Skills and our daily 15 mins 'MOVE IT'
RE. - Jesus as a leader. Through the stories of Jesus and Zaccheus and the Disciples of Peter and Andrew we will explore the chracteristics of Jesus.
PSHE / Jigsaw - Changing Me topic. This week our lesson is titled. How babies grow. We will start by finding matching pairs of pictures a baby and an adult (animals). We will think of 1 change that has happened from the baby to the adult picture. We will then talk about our feelings when we look at these baby animal pictures and ask the question, When we see the babies and their others together how does this make us feel? Mothers are often the ones who have the baby but the male can also be important. e.g. humans and penguins. /
We will consider what it might be like to have a new baby / kitten / puppy etc. What do they need, how does it feel?
Music - with Mrs Bolton, learning our Jigsaw songs.
TUESDAY - Danceathon day, dont forget to collect your sponsors.
FRIDAY - we will be having our first visit to Longton Library on Friday afternoon. If you haven't returned your slip I will be sending more home of Monday, please fill in and return to school ASAP.
Times Table Rockstars., by Mrs Catterall

On Friday I set up all the children on a program called Times Table Rockstars. Some children have taken home their letters which explain how to access it, if they haven't they will be bringing them home on Monday.
Knowing your times tables is very important as they are used in a variety of mathematical concepts and to solve problems. Quick recall is needed. 10-15 minutes everyday will have a significant impact on their speed and accuracy.
I will work with all the children on Monday to check they know how to access it.

We are completing our work on telling the time and then moving on to measuring length. |

We are walking to the library on Monday morning. We are reading Katie Morag stories. |

We are learning about daily life for Grace Darling and her rescue story. |

Enterprise |
We are making Sweetie Butterflies and then selling them on Wednesday in the quad at 3.15pm. |

PE |
We are exploring different ways of throwing equipment and jumping for distance in athletics. |

We are learning about the ways we have changed since we were babies. |

Reading Books |
We will change books on Thursday this week as Mrs Thomson and Mrs Regan have a job to do on Friday. |
We are really pleased about how well the children did in their phonics check last week. Everyone should feel very proud of themselves. Thank you very much for your support. You should receive the outcome of the check for your child inside their end of year report.

Topic Day 1 - DT, by Mrs Catterall

Today 1 group of children put their creative and designing heads on to create a self powering boat. They researched on the ipads how to make one. They draw a design and thought about the equipment they needed. They made their boat and then tested it. They evaluate their design, working out what went well and what needed to be changed / improved. They contined to tinker with their boats and tested again at the end of the day.
I only have videos of the first tests I'm afraid. The children were superstars, not giving up and extremely supportinve of each other helping out and holding things while people stuck bits together.
I special thanks to Mr Kennedy who supervided the glue gun!

We have been following instructions this week in a English. Yesterday we made some biscuits in the shape of a bear. Thank you to Mrs Gray for helping us. They taste yummy.
Thursday Assembly Blog, by Mrs Catterall

Today in assembly we talked about how we have three words that are important every year: CARE, GROW and SHINE! We talked how this term we are going to shine.We were then talking about a celebration which people will be celebrating this on Friday or Saturday. This celebration is held by Muslims. We talked about how Muslims fast, they fast because it is to teach them to focus on god and be generous, once fasting ends they have the celebration called Eid al-fitr.The celebration goes on for one,two or maybe even three days. How they celebrate is a bit like Christmas, they send Eid al-fitr cards out and dress formally, they also have big feasts and they wish each other a happy celebration!
We were also reminded about some special events that are coming up! If you want to be in the talent show you need to fill in the form, which is at the bottom of a parent mail that has been sent out, by tomorrow, you will need to print off the form and give it in. We are also have a own clothes day tomorrow, to be able to wear your own clothes you need to bring in some chocolates or a bottle of wine or a yummy beverage.

Yesterday Max was very proud to bring in his chicks to show, they were so cute and soft, Max showed them to Y1 and reception.
We also performed our dance as part of Dance from the Heart, we were amazing and enjoyed the circus performers. The theme was musicals and they performed to songs from The Greatest Showman, Mrs Fletcher had to stand very still as they juggled,
Today we tested our measuring skills by estimating liquids in containers and tipping the right amount in for other people to check. it was fun!

Thank you very much to all the children and parents/grandparents who joined us on our walking bus this morning, it was lovely to see you all there. We certainly made a long bus this morning.
It was a lovely start to the day, the opportunity to chat with a friend, enjoy the lovely weather as well as a bit of exercise. Remember we walk every day from booths, leaving at 8:30.

Hi and welcome back, I can’t believe we are in our last half term.Hope everyone had a fabulous break and managed to enjoy the amazing weather.
Today in Maths we were learning about reading scales in measures. We recapped the different ways we can measure and focussed today on measuring the temperature. Our challenge was to find the coldest temperature (the shade) and the hottest temperature ( in the sun) on the playground. We are going to be completing this every day this week and making comparisons. We had to wait patiently for the thermometer to settle so we could read the temperature.
In English we are learning a poem to perform for you in our assembly (which is coming up next week)
We also did our first move it time , keeping active for 15 minutes it was harder than we thought!

This week the Meerkats will be completing the national phonics check. The checks will be administered on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Monday we will spend time reviewing all we've learned in phonics so far. |

I hope you have had a wonderful relaxing holiday. The weather has been amazing, let's hope it continues.
This week we will be a busy one, we have dance from the heart on Tuesday, Fathers Day lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday, also on Wednesday we will be thinking about road safety as part of the charity Brake. On Friday it is non-uniform day to bring in items for the Summer fair next week.
In class
English. We are starting a Paddington themed unit this week. When I've discussed it with the children I will send more details of our plans. This will link into writing instructions this week.
Maths - our focus will be on Place Value this week. Adding and subtracting 1,10,100. Ordering and comparing numbers. Problem solving and reasoning tasks related to these aspects.
P.E. tennis skills, we will also be starting our daily mile run/walk. Over the holidays a special track has been created around the field, if finished we will be able to give it a go this week.
R.E. our unit this half term is Church as a community, leading others. This week our focus will be on the work and lives of Desmond Tutu and Martin Luther King.
Art - we will be creating some cards for Father's Day.
PSHE - Jigsaw. We will be finishing off last terms unit by focusing our relationships with the world in regarding to supporting charities. Our focus will be on the work of UNICEF
DT - On Thursday we have hoping to do some baking to link with our English work on following instructions.
On Friday of this week we will be devoting the whole day to our topic work. The children will be in a group of 6 and carry out a number of tasks linked to one of our topic curriculum areas - History, Geography, DT, Art, Science. Over the next 5 weeks they will experience a day for each of the topic areas.

Arts Week - Barbados Day, by Mrs Catterall

Our theme was Barbados. We carried out activities to find out about this Commonwealth Country.
We used the iPads to research; the flag, size of the country, population, capital city, animals that could be found there as well as other interesting facts.
We found out about the important festival known as he 'Crop Over', which celebrates the end of the sugar cane harvest. At the end of this they have a huge carnival style parade. We made bright and colourful masks like they might wear.
We also looked at the work of another artist who creates scenes of the colourful beach side huts.
The children really focused and concentrated, some of the designs were very detailed.
We finished off the day learning a dance from Barbados. It was fantastic, Mrs Catterall joined in and had a great time.
