Baking dog biscuits, by Mrs Catterall

As an introduction to our new English unit on instructions and as part of our topic work we had a go at making dog biscuits.  They contained wholemeal flour which is important as dogs need to eat food which contains carbohydrates.  The recipe we used and some biscuits will be making their way home to dog owner families tomorrow.  There will be more human food coming your way over the next couple of weeks.

Another action packed week ahead. 

Maths - we will be finishing our unit on mental strategies for adding and taking away 1’s, 10’s and 100’s.  Our focus will them move onto 2D shapes, measuring and perimeter.

English - on Monday the children will be writing their own version of the story The old woman in the vinegar bottle. They have some super ideas for where their character might want to live. I can’t wait to read them this week. Our new unit will be about instructions and to tie in with our scrumdiddlyumptious topic we will be focusing on recipes. 

Topic - the children will continue their exploration of whether or not breakfast cereal contains iron and then look at the diets of animals.  I don’t have any pets so if you have a pet at home maybe your child can talk to us about what you feed it and why.

Does breakfast cereal contain iron?, by Mrs Catterall

This week we began investigating whether or not our breakfast cereal contains iron.  Having crushed up and tested with a magnet, we are still not completely convinced.  Watch this space to see how this develops, the children are going to try a different method to extract any iron.

This week the koalas have enjoyed finding out about Robert Goddard who invented the first fuel powered rocket, space relax kids and a number treasure hunt. They had to find 8 numbers and order them biggest to smallest explaining their thinking. It was tricky to find them all! In our learning with Jigsaw Jack we had fun playing circle games and thinking about what we wanted our classroom to look like eg  helping each other, kind words and hands and superstar learning.

This week has been amazing we are half way through making moon buggies and we are excited to try out the luna track which Miss Reynolds is preparing .

We have been learing with a lady called Rebecca from nuffield heath gym and she has set us challenges for are goal for next week and the rest of this half term.

In PE we are learning to move carefully around the hall, moving forwards, backwards and sideways. We listen carefully to different instructions and then we had a go at a circuit where we were throwing, catching, balancing and stepping up and down....we thought about what our heart was doing inside of our body whilst we were exercising.

We have had a lovely day. We are reading the story of little red riding hood and we have made a bakers shop to bake like Grandma. We are playing board games and card games to encourage turn taking and speaking and listening.

Active maths, by Mr Pearson

Part of the specialist teachers that are coming to cover Mr Pearson's PPA and management time is a practical maths teacher. We will increase our mathematical knowledge by taking part in active challening actitivies.

Today we were learning about prime numbers.

The koalas have had fun splatting paper to make the background for our rockets ๐Ÿš€ even some shoe were turned into space shoes!!

We used our imaginations today to think about what we might see out of the rocket window. Following our story we worked with a partner to draw and write what we thought we might see. We then made a window this afternoon.We had lots of great ideas, shooting stars, alien rockets and alien houses to name a few.

However, the project can also be avbout something that interests your child, a hobby or a talent they have.

It was nice to meet some of you on Thursday at the Meet The teacher Meeting . For those of you unavble to attend the children will be bringing packs home on Monday containing the documents that were given out. I have uploaded the introductions letter onto the blog which gives details of everything you need to know , including who will be teaching your children when I have PPA and leadership time.

At the meeting I spoke about me being out of class for some days  over the next 3 weeks. This is to complete a year long research project I have been working on which has required me to spend time at Longton Library and the Harris Museum. The project ends on October 3rd.  

Week 2, by Miss Reynolds

this week we have been making moon buggies last week we planned them and this week we made the chassis for them. we used hot glue and saws[ no one lost a finger] but a lot of people burnt there fingers while using the glue gun.

In english we wrote our own myths. We had lots of good vocab ideas and interesting phrases.

Thank you to the parents who turned up tonight. If you couldnt make it , dont worry, I have put together a pack that will be in your child's bag tomorrow. Homework books have gone home tonight and we collect back in byTuesday of the following week.

Parents were asking about phonics and how we teach it...there is a quick parent guide on the files to download and I have just added a new one named 'read with phonics', Im sure over the next year you will soon become familiar with all the terms; phoneme, grapheme, digraph etc...

The Koalas really enjoyed finding out about rockets and did some great labelling of the rocket parts. We have also been practising our counting skills.

We had a great relax kids session with a space theme , we did some peer massages and some realaxing moves and stretches, we were fantastic!

This week we will be

Practicing handwriting in our new handwriting books.

Writing about the charaters of the old woman and the fairy from our story.

Exploring numbers so we understand the value of the digits and find different ways of partitioning the numbers.

Exploring the grammar of speech. Can we write speech using the correct punctuation?

What is a healthy diet?

We will be finding out more about our word of the year - Metacognition.

Our first swimming lesson is this Thursday. 

Lots going on - fingers crossed the weather improves and we can do some gardening on Friday.

Today we have all had PE in the hall. We played the bean game, balancing beanbags and sleeping lions. We all managed to get dressed and undressed and back in our own clothes.

Lunar Landings, by Miss Reynolds

This half term we are going to be learning about the Lunar landings. We are going to make moon buggys.Everyone has been put into groups of three and we are all looking forward to building a robot and make a track for it to run up,down left and right and we will  be using craft stuff like toilet chubes and lego pices and we are going to use milk bottle lids and lots of other stuff like that and they will all be realy cool and fun for all of us to play with and we will be programming them to operate on their own!

 

Also Miss Reynolds would like us to bring in some egg cartons for Mrs Catterall's special project.

Wow, what a week!  The Meerkats have been marvellous and settled in well to year 3. They have shown great listening, great participation in class discussions, great teamwork and have just been amazing.  Well done Meerkats. 

I'm looking forward to next week.๐Ÿ™‚
