Arts Week - Barbados Day, by Mrs Catterall

Our theme was Barbados. We carried out activities to find out about this Commonwealth Country.
We used the iPads to research; the flag, size of the country, population, capital city, animals that could be found there as well as other interesting facts.
We found out about the important festival known as he 'Crop Over', which celebrates the end of the sugar cane harvest. At the end of this they have a huge carnival style parade. We made bright and colourful masks like they might wear.
We also looked at the work of another artist who creates scenes of the colourful beach side huts.
The children really focused and concentrated, some of the designs were very detailed.
We finished off the day learning a dance from Barbados. It was fantastic, Mrs Catterall joined in and had a great time.

Today we enjoyed working with Peter Bourne completing poppies on the front of school and painting fishes. We also made our own stampers and enjoyed printing patterns.

Yestaerday we travelled over to New Zealand and learnt about Maoris and the artist Raewyn Harris. She uss the Koru leaf as inspiration for her artwork.It looks like a a curled up fern and is a traditional symbol with meaning for the Maori people. It symbolises new life, strength, peace and growth.
We went outside and enjoyed sketching English leafs.

As I'm sure many of you already have found out, our class production this year is Robin and The Sherwood Hoodies. Everyone has had their parts now and we've started having a little read through of the script, so we have some ideas what our characters are like. Our production isn't until early July, but I thought it would be best if we got a headstart on learning our lines and sourcing bits for costumes while we've got this nice long break. Everyone has got a full script because it was much easier than copying individual lines and lyrics as this is quite a large play, so people have lines here there and everywhere (I didn't want to kill Mrs Woolley with photocopying!)
I thought it would be helpful to put the songs up here, that way people can get a wiggle on with learning them (and possibly thinking up a few dance move suggestions if you're feeling up to it!) One of the songs I have shortened because it seemed to go on forever, but if you check your script you'll see where it is. :)
I hope you all have a lovely half term and I look forward to working on the production with you all after the holidays.

What a fabulous afternoon we had for our School Games sports day yesterday. The children all had a great afternoon taking part in the activity stations and then competing in the races. A big thank you to all the children ,spectators and staff for all helping to make it such an enjoyable afternoon. Well done to red team 2 for gaining the most individual team points and a big congratulatio

Today started with a dance session in the hall. The class did an amazing job learning a dance from Sri Lanka.
Back in class the children were challenged o create 3D models based on Sri Lankan masks. They had to think symmetry, size, shape, colour and type of paper to use to create the models.

The Penguins enjoyed looking at some more paintings by Jamini Roy, with an animal theme. We also added in some fabulous Indian inspired patterns to our elephant , which will join the others being completed by the meerkats and Reception.

Today we had a visit from an artist, Caroline. She explained to us how she turns a sheep's fleece into wool, how she uses onion skin and daffodils to dye it and then how she uses it to weave.
We had a go at weaving wool, it was a bit fiddly and tricky, it took a long time. It looks amazing, we are very proud of our work.

On Monday we wore badges of the 53 commonwealth nations. We stood in a circle and passed the string from country to country in the order in which they joined the Commonwealth to create this web. We found out that some countries such as South Africa joined, then left, then joined again!
What links all the countries is the common language of English along with sharing common values and principles as set out in the Commonwealth Charter. We also used atlases to locate the different countries and had a guess the country flag competition.
In the afternoon we drew action poses to show the different sports in the Commonwealth Games. Then 2 Science teachers and some 6th form students came to class. We tested different foods for starch and fat. Athletes need the energy from these foods when carrying out their sport.

We learned that peacocks are the national bird of India. We watched a video of the peacock dance and painted our own using pearly paints.

We used clay to make diva lamp holders. We will paint them once they’re dry.
