Science Week Day 4, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 22nd Mar 2018 @ 2:09pm

This morning we have had lots of fun with eggs. we made hypotheses about whether or not it is possible to crack an egg by holding the egg in your palm or between your thumb and forefinger. We found out that it wasn't. We then wrapped our eggs in cling film and applied force to one area of the gg and they cracked. We discovered that eggs have strong points where the pressure is equally spread so they don't crack.

Our next eggsperiment was to answer the question will an egg float in tap water? We discovered that they do t . We then aasked will an egg float in salty water? We made up a salt solution which we topped up with tap water. The egg sank through the tap water but when it reached the salty water at the bottom of the jug it floated. This is because salt water is denser that tap water.

The morning finished watching a fantastic sho called Journey To The Bottom of The Earth.

After lunch we discussed healthy diets and thought about vegetarianism before designing science lab coats.

The children have been busy inventing their own new plant, designing a seed , the plant and thinking about how the seeds will be dispersed. Some creative ideas!

We have also set up an experiment with celery and white carnations put in purple water, we have predicted what we think ,we will let you know if we were right👍

Tremendous Tuesday, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 20th Mar 2018 @ 9:03pm

The Penguins finished cooking for their enterprise this morning.A big thank you to Grace's grandma who came in and helped again and a big thank you to parents and children who helped after school. All our pizza slices went  and there were lots of great comments about how delicious they were - well done Penguins! Linda is counting the money for us and I will let you know our profit. I know some people are keen to have a go at making the pizzas at home, Iwill let you have a copy so you can have a go over Easter.

The Penguins enjoyed looking for the shortest and longest leaves around school and measuring them and then recording the results. The longest was actually the leaves on the spider plant in the classroom.

More science fun tomorrow 🙂

Birds’ nests, by Mrs Coxhead

Date: 20th Mar 2018 @ 5:23pm

This half term we have been using the huge apparatus in the hall. We have learnt how to get on the rope safely. We can climb up the apparatus and make wide, long and tall shapes. We have had a go at doing a forward roll.

Science week - day 1, by Mrs Hothersall

Date: 20th Mar 2018 @ 11:20am

WOW- Mrs Catterall showed us all some really amazing science activities in assembly. Then we went back to class and found out what was in our big box. We found chicks, caterpillars, ducklings, lambs, calves......baby animals. We are going to find out about life cycles and new life.

The Giraffes started the day with a what if question to think about . The question was What if there were no clocks ? They came up with some great ideas .

Next the children discussed in pairs what food chains are, revising work from last term. Following a quiz , using scientific vocabulary: producer, consumer, prey and predator the class have been set the task of creating paper chain food chains.

Science week, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 19th Mar 2018 @ 6:55pm

We launched our Science week with an exciting assembly delivered by Mrs Catterall, lots of things to make us think. We took one of the challenges back to the classroom ,which was to see how long we could stretch the putty before it snapped. I think we need to practise more tomorrow!

A big thank you to the helpers who came in today to help with our enterprise, the pizzas are looking yummy and the smell was delicious too, I'm sure we will be well supported tomorrow after school.

Don't forget we are potting up our seeds on Wednesday , the children will need to bring a small container to take them home, along with the grass heads. Some have started to sprout grass in some random places!!! Please keep them growing over the holidays I would  love to see some funky hairstyles!

More Science, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 19th Mar 2018 @ 2:15pm

This afternoon the Giraffes have investigated black holes using balloons, tin foil, their hands and a drawing pin.

They have also learnt that the famous artist Leonardo davVInci was an inventor as well as an artist. He did many technical  drawings of things such as tanks, helicopters, calculators and contact lenses to name a few .

Giraffes do Science, by Mrs Fletcher

Date: 19th Mar 2018 @ 12:03pm

Science week started with a super assembly where Mrs Catterall gave us  lots of interesting things to think about and see.

Back in class we predicted what might happen to some black seed like things Mrs Catterall had given us in a pot of water.

Next we worked in threes to think about famous scientists we know, scientific inventions and scientific facts.

After play we learnt about the life of Professor Stephen Hawking, a person we believe is a true inspiration.

One of Professor Hawking's main areas of study was Black Holes. As individuals we thought about what we think of when we hear those words, what they look like, how we know about them and how sat here in our classroom we could investigate black holes.

A great mornings work

I've uploaded the photos from my group, but there are plenty more to come from the other groups and whole group activity. At least it'll give you an idea of what we've been up to this weekend. 😊
