Week Beginning Monday 23rd October 2017, by Miss Adamson

Date: 21st Oct 2017 @ 4:17pm

Hello all :)

I hope that you are enjoying your weekends!

This week is called 'Check-Up Week'. We will all be doing assessments in order to help me to plan the next steps for the children as effectively as possible. This is how the week should look:

Maths

All of the children will do a small arithmetic and reasoning assessment.

Phonics

We will carry on with our daily phonics lessons. Miss Adamson's group will be learning ie (a colourful tie), ue (blue glue), aw (yawn at dawn) and ew (chew the stew). Mrs Thomson's group will be learning oi (spoil the boy), ear (hear with your ear) and air (that's not fair). All the children will also do a short phonics check with Miss Adamson.

Reading

We will have guided reading as usual on Wednesday. In addition, children will do a short reading assessment with Miss Adamson or Mrs Thomson.

Writing

We are doing some special pieces of writing as part of a whole school theme called 'Journey Back in Time'. We will be reading the story of Old Bear and retelling it in our writing.

History

In keeping with Journey Back in Time and Old Bear, we will be learning about toys from the past. We will compare them with toys in the present and create our own timeline.

Homework

This week there will be no homework in the children's purple books. Instead, children will receive their Holiday Passports. During every school holiday (Y1-Y6), children fill in their holiday passport with details of what they have done over the break. We love reading what you have done and it makes for lovely memories to look back on when your child gets to Year 6. Holiday Passports are kept inside the red book bag.

I look forward to seeing you all on Monday!

Miss Adamson :)

P.S. If you have any outstanding toast money to be paid for this past half-term (£7.80). Please send it to school with your child this week.

Friday mindfulness , by Mr Pearson

Date: 20th Oct 2017 @ 11:22am

Today in Mindfulness session we have learnt to consider and focus on our breath.

we have also learnt to finger breath,

http://blissfulkids.com/mindfulness-for-children-take-five-exercise/

Next we looked at snow dome to explain how our mind can be at times all fizzzy and dizzy and how we can use mindfulness techniques our minds can then settle down

Finally, we looked at weeble wobbles to compare how sometimes in life we may have little things that might make us wobble and we bounce back, then when a big wobble in life might affect us, however like the weeble wobble we will bounce back.

Another good website to look at.

Hello all :)

I hope that you are enjoying the weekend.

This is what we are doing this week:

English

We are writing instructions for how to make a superhero hand puppet (now that we are the experts!). We will also learn about plurals.

Maths

We are using a number line to help us add and subtract. We will decide which is the most efficient way to add to numbers and what happens to the number line when we subtract. We will introduce the concept of diffference through 'how many more?' and 'how many less?'.

Phonics

Mrs Thomson's group are working on: or (shut the door), ur (nurse with a purse), ow (brown cow). Miss Adamson's group are reviewing er (better letter) and learning ir (whirl and twirl) and wh as in what, where when etc and ph as in alphabet.

Handwriting

I hope that we will finish our work on curly caterpillar letters this week (letters that begin with the magic c).

P.E.

We are playing the Honey Pot game. We will use underarm throws and running skills for this game.

RE/Maths

In the afternoons this week we are learning about Diwali because Hindus celebrate Diwali on Thursday 19th October 2017. We are going to see what 2D shapes we can identify in Rangoli patterns and design our own. We will also learn about Diwali gifts and 3D shapes. We'll guess what the gift could be depending on the 3D shape of the parcel!

Wednesday afternoon

On Wednesday afternoon, Miss Adamson is at a meeting so Mrs Ainsworth will be teaching the Meerkats.

I look forward to seeing you all next week,

Miss Adamson

Poetry, by Miss Adamson

Date: 14th Oct 2017 @ 12:58pm

This week the meerkats have written four poems each! They are inspired by Paul Cookson poems that Mrs Thomson and Miss Adamson learned about when we were out of class last Monday. The children wrote That's No Place to Put a Pet, two mini east poems and a riddle. The riddles have been entered into a young writers competition (see www.youngwriters.co.uk/competitions/little-riddlers). I am sure the judges will be astounded by all the children's wonderful writing.

Here re are some pictures of the children looking for inspiration for their mini east poem.

Jigsaw - helping others learn, by Miss Adamson

Date: 14th Oct 2017 @ 12:52pm

We made freeze frames to show how we could help others to learn. The rest of the class guessed what we were doing in the freeze frames.

Hand puppets, by Miss Adamson

Date: 14th Oct 2017 @ 12:47pm

This week we designed and made our super hero hand puppets. When we were finished we decided if we were pleased with what we had made and wrote a sentence to explain why.

Mindfulness , by Mr Pearson

Date: 13th Oct 2017 @ 11:33am

Today we completed an experiment, the children had a choice of a minstrel chocolate or a blueberry. Two of the minstrels were place in front of the children, the first minstrel the children just consumed straight away.

The second minstrel, the children had to look at it first, turn it over, then smell it, touch their lower lip with it, then place it on their tongue and roll it around their mouth, finally they had to bite it in half and slowly saviour the taste.

The children will be doing this with their food over the next and have encouraged to train their parents.

The hippocampus part of our brain were used to take in all of the senses of eating the minstrel.

The hippocampus was then explained to the children as it links our memories together, when we sleep our brain files them away. An amazing lesson from Tanya once again.

Yoga Friday , by Mr Pearson

Date: 13th Oct 2017 @ 11:15am

Today we have been studying how to work on our balance in yoga, warrior 3, flamingo.

Mr Pearson joined in, no photographic evidence exists though. 😀

Projects, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 12th Oct 2017 @ 9:39pm

Wow, what a creative bunch you are Bongos.  We have had a whole variety of projects this week; times tables, shadow posters and investigations, biographies, map work, French vocabulary to name just a few.

Well done

Enterprise, by Mrs Catterall

Date: 12th Oct 2017 @ 8:59pm

Last Friday was a busy day.  The Bongos spent the morning preparing for our enterprise event. Thank you to Mrs Gray and Sandye for supporting the children in the kitchen.

The marshmallows sold quickly with only a few left.  The children were amazing and ran their stall with very little support.

We made £134.20 profit.  This money goes directly to the class to spend on items to support their learning. We are hoping to use some of it as part of an exciting trip which I am arranging for later on in the school year.  As a class we will discuss what else we would like to purchase.

Thank you to everyone who came and supported the event.

Longton Village, by Mrs Pratten

Date: 12th Oct 2017 @ 6:42pm

We walked in to Longton today and had a look at the shops and street furniture . We drew some great pictures and had lots of fun as people waved to us (a lot!) and trucks honked their horns, we loved it!!
