Maths - measuring, by Mrs Catterall

Today we practised measuring in cm and mm. We went outside to find 2 leaves, one longer and one shorter than 10cm. We then took a closer look and measured them to the nearest mm.

A tree in autumn, by Miss Adamson

Today we sketched a tree in the playground. Its leaves have turned yellow and orange. We will continue to observe how this tree changes throughout the seasons.

Maths - naming 2D shapes. Measuring and drawing lines to the nearest 1/2 cm, finding the perimeter of shapes.
Spelling - statutory word lists

Science - light, shadows, weather permitting!
French - hello, goodbye, my name is.
Jigsaw - carrot car challenge - team work skills.

This afternoon we learnt how to say hello, my name is... and goodbye in French. We then used this to read the poem 'Two little dickie birds'. We made puppets and then filmed ourselves reading it out aloud.

Maths - we are thinking about measuring using a ruler ,comparing lengths
English - The Tiresome Ted, Katie Morag story, sequencing events and writing letters, learning our Harvest poem
Computers- continuing to explore Sratch junior using algorithms
RE - learning about Hinduism the Puja tray
PE - gymnastics,rolling and balancing, Games, throwing and catching
Jigsaw- working co- operatively
Art- sketching skills

Maths focus subtraction column method up to thousands and then to 2decimal places.
we will be moving on to solving problems by Friday.
English focus writing in paragraphs, using James and the Giant Peach as a theme for our writing
GPS Spelling words we are focusing on have been given to the children. Further work on inverted commas for speech and adverts for speech will be covered.
Cricket, by Mrs Catterall

On Friday we had our first cricket session. The rain held off for most of the lesson so we did our lesson outside.
We had to hit all 3 balls as far as we could and then run between 2 cones until the fielding team had gathered in the balls and put then back in the cones.
We learnt that it is best to hit them in different directions to make the fielders have to run more. If we hold onto the bat when we run we can reach out between the cones and therefore not run as far, be quicker and do more runs to earn points.

If you have any artefacts/special skills/holiday pics etc. that would help us with our learning - please feel free to volunteer them! We would love to have some visitors to our class this year and learning always works best when it is contextualised!
Yellow week, by Mrs Hothersall

This week we will be looking at the colour yellow. We will focus our literacy on a story by Shirley Hughes called Alfie's feet. We will continue to count and add in maths and also look at measure. We are really working hard with our learn its and we are already up to 4+4=....
In phonics we are learning I,n,m,d phonemes and the simple words in and at. Please support you child at home looking at numbers, phonemes and this week reading books will be coming home.
PE - we are going to have a go at PE this week, fu, fun, fun!
So another busy and fun filled week, all the children are settling in really well and we are learning new skills every week.

On Friday, we did some hands-on decimal work. First of all, we found out how tall Roald Dahl was (as it was recently Roald Dahl day) and laid out some rulers to see how big 6 foot 6 is. Then we compared our own heights to Roald Dahls and realised just how big he was! Then we looked up how big the BFG was supposed to be - 24 foot! We worked out the difference between Roald Dahl and the BFG in feet and inches, then converted that to centimetres and finally, converted that into metres.... we found it really tricky!
Then, to give us a brain break, we played a decimal number bond to 1 game and Jack J set a high score for us to try and beat next week! In the afternoon, we measured how far we could jump in centimetres and then converted it to metres.... none of us came close to Mike Powell's record of 8.95m, but Luke W jumped the farthest in our class-competition with an impressive double-footed leap of 2.19m! 😊

We have been practising our ability to retell a story by making our own news reports. The children worked independently to come up with their own script. They also made decisions around characterisation and wardrobe choices, and they even edited their own videos completely independently using iMovie. We hope you enjoy them as much as we have enjoyed making them!
(Sorry for having them in separate uploads... I can't quite figure out how to get them all on one device! Haha!)
*Prank Phone Calls*, by Miss Leigh

As the Bears become more independent it is highly possible they now have a phone. They will slowly begin to immerse themselves in the world of text messages, apps and social media. Today, there was some discussion around making prank phone calls and face timing unknown people between pupils. We have taken this opportunity to discuss the impact of prank phone calls, both on the recipient of the phone call and on those making the calls. We have talked about why we need to keep ourselves safe and how making prank phone calls can actually makes us more vulnerable.
You might want to take this opportunity to check in with your child about phone, internet and personal safety.

In our first few weeks, we have coverd a lot of stuff such as The Anglo-Saxons in History/Topic. In English we have been learning about ;;;SEMI COLONS;;; Miss Reynolds told us that not many people know how to use them (Example I would like: some juicy,lovely apples; some yellow,spiky pinapples;and some soft,small nectarines.) In Maths we are learning about decimals and rounding up and down. Yesterdays LO: was LO:To solve problems including 3 decimal places (Date Wednesday 21 September 2017.)

Today we visited Mr Pearson’s restaurant. We added up prices of the food then bought the food, to do this we used a formal method. At the end we added up the prices for the week we had spent, it was fun.
